‘HUGE’ — College Basketball World Reacts As Baylor Steals 5-Star Recruit From North Carolina HC Michael Malone

The college basketball world reacted as one of the most exciting recruits in the 2026 class rejected North Carolina and Michael Malone for Baylor.

Days after decommitting to North Carolina and reopening his recruitment, one of the most talented guards of the 2026 recruiting class has announced his commitment to Baylor. Dylan Mingo will team up with his brother, Kayden, in the Big 12 conference next season.

Mingo decided to reopen his recruitment after North Carolina parted ways with Hubert Davis and hired Michael Malone as head coach, and now he’s taking his talents to the Bears.

Dylan Mingo Spurns North Carolina For Baylor

Baylor was one of the colleges on Mingo’s shortlist before he decided to initially commit to UNC, and the Bears pounced once he reopened his recruitment.

“Top-10 senior Dylan Mingo, the best available guard in the 2026 class, has committed to Baylor, he told ESPN,” ESPN’s Jeff Borzello wrote. “Mingo will join his brother, Kayden, in Waco after he transferred from Penn State. ‘It is a blessing to play with him again,’ Mingo told @PaulBiancardi.”

College basketball insider Jeff Goodman called the commitment of the younger Mingo brother “huge” for Baylor. The 6-foot-5 point guard is a consensus five-star recruit and was named MVP of the 2025 NBPA Top 100 Camp after averaging 23.8 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.5 rebounds per game.

“Scott Drew gets the Mingo brothers: Penn State transfer Kayden Mingo – 13.7 ppg, 4.3 apg Incoming Top 10 Dylan Mingo and former UNC commit HUGE for the Baylor Bears,” Goodman wrote.

College basketball recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw pointed out that Mingo is the No. 1-ranked point guard of the 2026 recruiting class, while Grayson Grundhoefer shares some of his highlights to give Baylor fans a glimpse at his game.

One Baylor sports podcast couldn’t contain their excitement, jokingly comparing the Mingo brothers to the legendary duo of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

“Mingo brothers in 2027-28,” they wrote along with a picture of Jordan and Pippen.

Baylor beat writer Zach Smith shared some of the Mingo brothers’ stats as they get ready to link up with Scott Drew’s squad.

“Scott Drew and Baylor will have both Mingo brothers on the roster next season. Dylan is a Top 10 prospect and consensus five-star recruit. Kayden was one of the top players in the transfer portal after averaging 13.7 points and 4.3 assists per game for Penn State last season,” he wrote.

Baylor finished 13th in the Big 12 conference with a 17-17 overall record last season, but Mingo will hope to help the Bears improve on that next year.
