‘Most Loaded Team in the Country’ — College Basketball World Reacts to Duke HC Jon Scheyer’s ‘Unreal’ Job Retaining Talent

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer earned plenty of praise for retaining five key players and adding some reinforcements to build a potential juggernaut.

In college basketball these days, NIL money from top programs often outweighs player loyalty, making it increasingly difficult for coaches to keep their roster intact over the offseason.

Amid this landscape, the Duke Blue Devils managed to return the bulk of their core from last season, defying their recent one-and-done history. Head coach Jon Scheyer reversed the trend by bringing back five key returnees, making Duke a standout this offseason.

Jon Scheyer Earns Praise Amid Duke’s Strong Offseason

The Blue Devils’ 2025-26 season ended with a heartbreaking last-second defeat to UConn in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. After a loss like this, many teams would have experienced a ton of transfers and roster turnover, especially with National College Player of the Year Cameron Boozer declaring for the NBA Draft.

Instead, Duke has gotten a ton of great news recently, as Patrick Ngongba II, Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, Dame Sarr, and Sebastian Wilkins all announced that they will be back with the Blue Devils next season.

Scheyer also landed top transfers John Blackwell and Drew Scharnowski, along with highly rated freshmen Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., Bryson Howard, and Maxime Meyer, so while Duke will have some familiar faces, they have also added reinforcements.

Alec Kichian, who runs NBA Draft Point, shared the Blue Devils’ projected lineup for the 2026-27 season and posed an open-ended question: “Most loaded team in the country?”

It’s worth noting that Darren Harris and Nik Khamenia transferred, while Isaiah Evans entered the NBA Draft. Still, Scheyer and his coaching staff are getting ton of praise for retaining so many key pieces and retooling around them, including from Duke podcaster Ryan Lommen.

“Retain and reload. Unreal by Scheyer and staff. Can’t wait for next season 🔥,” Lommen wrote.

CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein chimed in to highlight Duke’s depth. It will be interesting to see how Scheyer ultimately allocates minutes across his deep perimeter lineup composed of Foster, Blackwell, Sarr, Boozer, Rippey, and Howard.

There are still a few scholarship spots remaining at Duke as Scheyer and Co. try to put the finishing touches on a juggernaut with national championship aspirations.

Duke is considered an early title favorite alongside Florida and Michigan, as the Gators and Wolverines have also had a terrific offseason.
