Despite Kohl Rosario Commitment, College Basketball Expert Unsure of Bill Self, Kansas’ Success

Kansas adds four-star guard Kohl Rosario to its 2025 class, but questions remain about the team’s star power heading into this season.

The Kansas basketball program and HC Bill Self continue to shape their roster for the 2025-26 season, landing a key addition on Tuesday with the commitment and signing of Kohl Rosario. He joins five-star guard Darryn Peterson, the top-ranked shooting guard in the class, who committed to the Jayhawks last November. Together, they’ll be part of a retooled squad.

The Jayhawks are adding talent, but some still wonder whether the roster has enough star power to win at the highest level. College basketball expert Kevin Sweeney shares the same concern.

College Basketball Analyst Kevin Sweeney Questions Kansas’ Championship Potential

Reacting to Kohl Rosario’s commitment, Sports Illustrated‘s Kevin Sweeney pointed out that Kansas may still be short on elite-level talent beyond their five-star guard.

“Kansas still lacks top-end talent outside of Darryn Peterson,” he wrote on X.

However, he also acknowledged the strategic approach the Jayhawks have taken in building their roster.

“But KU has effectively targeted guys with positional size and shooting ability to surround their star. Rosario turned 18 in January and made 20 threes at 44% in eight EYBL games this spring,” he added.

The 6’5″ Kohl Rosario brings size and scoring ability to a program looking for a fresh start. He was ranked No. 72 nationally in the 2026 class and rated the 13th-best shooting guard, according to the 247Sports Composite.

His commitment adds to a revamped Kansas roster that is looking to bounce back after three straight years of early NCAA tournament exits and underwhelming finishes in Big 12 play.

The Jayhawks lost in the first round to Arkansas in March 2025, ending a 17-year streak of first-round wins. They also exited in the second round in 2024 (to Gonzaga) and 2023 (to Arkansas as defending champions).

Rosario joins a group of incoming freshmen that includes Darryn Peterson, athletic combo guard Corbin Allen, and forward Samis Calderon.

The Jayhawks also turned to the transfer portal to add experience, landing senior guards Melvin Council Jr. from St. Bonaventure, Tre White from Illinois, and Jayden Dawson from Loyola Chicago.

Rosario arrives at Kansas with a strong background in both production and winning. He played a key role in YNG Dreamerz’s 2025 Overtime Elite title run, knocking down 41.4 percent of his three-point attempts in the playoffs, hitting 12-of-29 from deep across seven games.

Rosario has also shown steady shooting ability throughout his high school career. At Moravian Prep, he connected on 35.3 percent of his threes during the 2023-24 season, making 60 triples in 24 games.

During the regular season with Overtime Elite, Rosario averaged 15.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He remained consistent in the playoffs, scoring 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game on his way to the championship.

The Miami native reclassified from the 2026 class to join Kansas immediately for the upcoming season, giving Self and the Jayhawks an unexpected boost as they look to return to championship contention after recent early tournament exits.
