Kansas basketball head coach Bill Self has explained exactly why four-star shooting guard Kohl Rosario was essential for the Jayhawks. The Miami native moved from the 2026 class to the 2025 class to join Kansas immediately for next season.
The Jayhawks officially announced the recruit on June 24 through their athletics department. Self’s comments about the recruit show how Kansas builds its roster with specific needs in mind.
Bill Self Details Three Critical Factors Behind Kohl Rosario’s Reclassification and Kansas Commitment
Kansas Athletics confirmed Rosario’s signing on Tuesday, announcing his financial aid agreement for the 2025-26 season. The 6’5″ guard from Miami brings championship experience from Overtime Elite, where he helped YNG Dreamerz win the 2025 title.

Self was clear about what Rosario brings to Kansas. “We feel that what Kohl brings from a perimeter athletic shooting standpoint is something that we’ve needed to add to this year’s roster,” the coach said. The shooting guard has proven his three-point ability at every level.
During YNG Dreamerz’s championship run, Rosario made 12-of-29 three-pointers for 41.4 percent in seven playoff games. His shooting has been consistent throughout high school at Moravian Prep, where he shot 35.3 percent from three in 2023-24, while making 60 threes in 24 games.
Self also praised Rosario’s work habits. “He is one of the hardest-working youngsters that we’ve ever recruited and feels the transition to college ball will be more seamless due to this,” Self said. This work ethic helped Rosario rise from unranked to a top-50 player nationally.
His third reason for wanting Rosario was his mental approach to the game. “He’s been very well drilled, and I think his competitiveness will add of piece to our culture,” the coach said. This competitive spirit showed during high-pressure moments with YNG Dreamerz.

Rosario put up solid numbers during his regular season at Overtime Elite. He averaged 15.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while helping his team reach the championship. His playoff numbers stayed strong with 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
The timing worked perfectly for Kansas to land Rosario. “It’s not often there’s a player of his potential to become available at this point,” Self said. The move to 2025 let Kansas fill a roster need while getting a player with significant potential.
Self’s approach shows how Kansas carefully builds its roster for another championship run. Rosario joins five-star guard Darryn Peterson, forward Samis Calderon, guard Bryson Tiller, and guard Corbin Allen as the fifth high school player signed. The group makes up what looks like a top-five recruiting class nationally.
Rosario’s path from Miami to Moravian Prep to Overtime Elite shows he can adapt and grow. His 44.4 percent three-point shooting during spring AAU play with Team CP3 got him noticed by top programs, including Duke and North Carolina.
The combination of shooting ability, championship experience, and a strong work ethic gives Rosario a chance to help Kansas right away. Self’s focus on these three specific qualities shows that Rosario fits exactly what the Jayhawks need while giving them options for different lineups throughout the season.
With three open scholarships remaining, Kansas had the flexibility to add a player of Rosario’s caliber late in the recruiting cycle.
