Bruce Pearl has always been outspoken as a head coach, but this offseason, he announced his retirement from coaching. During his time at Auburn University, he led the Tigers to a 246-125 record and guided the program to its only two appearances in the Final Four. Among the players who developed under him was former Auburn player Isaac Okoro.
The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Okoro with the fifth pick of the 2020 draft. After struggling to find his role with the team, Okoro was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Lonzo Ball this offseason. So far this season, he has found his role with the Bulls, averaging 7.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.

However, across his last two games, Okoro has accumulated 30 points, three rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block. This production has caught the eye of his former coach, Pearl, who had something to say about Okoro’s current head coach, Billy Donovan.
When asked about Okoro’s role this season, Bruce Pearl had this to say about Donovan:
“Issac has found a great home in Chicago playing for one of the best coaches and leaders of men. These two have something in common and that is they were raised right by the Okoro and Donovan families! @chicagobulls”
Pearl highlighted Donovan’s reputation not just as a coach, but as a leader and developer of young men. Looking at Donovan’s track record, it is obvious how good a leader he is when you look at his career at the University of Florida.
In 19 seasons with the Gators, Donovan had an overall record of 467-186 and won SEC Coach of the Year three times. Tournament-wise, Donovan won six SEC Championships and four SEC Tournament Championships. Additionally, he made four Final Fours and won the National Championship in back-to-back years 2006 and 2007.
With the Gators, he had the pleasure of coaching Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Bradley Beal, and many other notable players. In the 2015-2016 season, Donovan left the Gators and became the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, before moving to the Bulls on September 22, 2020.
During his time in the NBA, Donovan has compiled a record of 444-363, resulting in a .550% win-loss percentage so far.
Ultimately, Pearl’s message was simple: credit where it’s due. Okoro is finally in a system that understands his playing style and can utilize him effectively. That system is led by a coach who knows how to maximize talent and help players grow as men.
