Braden Smith enters the 2026 NCAA Tournament riding one of the most impressive stretches of his career, leading Purdue to a Big Ten Tournament championship and sitting just one assist shy of the all-time NCAA record.
Braden Smith’s Career at Purdue
Braden Smith was born on July 25, 2003, making him 22 years old. The senior point guard is in his fourth and final season at Purdue, where he has cemented himself as one of the best floor generals in program history.
Smith was born in Russellville, Arkansas, before moving to Westfield, Indiana, at age four. He attended Westfield High School, where he became the school’s all-time leader in points with 1,629 and assists with 453.
His high school career culminated in winning Indiana’s prestigious Mr. Basketball award in 2022. He led Westfield to its first sectional title in 105 years during his senior season.
Despite his decorated high school resume, Smith was only a three-star recruit. He committed to Purdue over offers from Appalachian State, Belmont, Montana, North Texas, and Toledo.

That decision has turned out to be one of the best in recent college basketball history. Smith has developed into a consensus All-American and one of the most accomplished point guards in the sport.
2025-26 Season Statistics
This season, Smith is averaging 14.0 points, 9.1 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. He is shooting 44.6% from the field and 36.5% from three-point range.
He was named to the First Team All-Big Ten for the third time in his career. Smith was also a unanimous preseason All-American selection heading into the 2025-26 season.
Smith is the only player in NCAA history with 1,300 points, 700 assists, and 500 rebounds in his first three seasons. He has recorded four 20-point, 10-assist games this year alone.
His 23 career games with 10 or more assists are the most in Big Ten history. Smith also holds the Purdue single-season assist record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1975.
The senior guard was at his best during the Big Ten Tournament. He led Purdue to four wins in four days, culminating in an 80-72 victory over top-seeded Michigan in the championship game.
Smith finished the title game with 14 points and 11 assists while being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He famously wore No. 41 after ripping his No. 3 jersey in frustration early in the game.
That performance left Smith with 1,075 career assists, just one shy of Bobby Hurley’s all-time NCAA record of 1,076. He could break that historic mark in Purdue’s first NCAA Tournament game.
NCAA Tournament Path and NBA Draft Outlook
Purdue enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West Region with a 27-8 record. The Boilermakers will face No. 15 seed Queens on Friday in the first round.
The Big Ten Tournament title was Purdue’s first since 2023 and third in program history. It capped an impressive turnaround after the Boilermakers lost four of their final six regular-season games.

Smith is projected to be selected in the 2026 NBA Draft, with most analysts viewing him as a late first-round or early second-round pick. His 6-foot stature is a concern, but his elite playmaking and shooting should translate to the next level.
For now, Smith is focused on leading Purdue on a deep tournament run. With his court vision, shooting ability, and experience, the Boilermakers have the floor general to make some noise in March.
