The Minnesota Vikings felt they’d found their quarterback of the future in 2024 when they drafted J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick. However, they didn’t get much of an opportunity to evaluate him because he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.
While McCarthy returned, injuries continue to plague him, and the Vikings are now on their third quarterback of the season. This time, it is undrafted rookie free agent Max Bosmer, and one NFL legend is making a shocking prediction for his first start.

What Record Is Vikings QB Max Bosmer Predicted To Break During His First Start?
McCarthy got the Vikings off to a hot start, even setting team records in Week 1. Unfortunately, he suffered a high ankle sprain during their Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and missed the next five games. Carson Wentz was the team’s QB 2, and he took over the reins, but he sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 8.
McCarthy returned in Week 9 and led them to victory over the Detroit Lions. After the Week 12 loss, McCarthy entered the concussion protocol and has been ruled out of the upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers.
On the NFL Network’s pregame show, former NFL coach turned analyst Steve Mariucci made a bold prediction to his co-host Kurt Warner. He believes that Brosmer will not only play well but will play well enough to surpass Warner.
“I know an undrafted quarterback free agent today for the Vikings that’s playing quarterback, we all know his name, Max Brosmer. He was over at New Hampshire and then he transferred in the portal over to the University of Minnesota. You know what? He’s gonna smash your record, 485 yards today. You know what? He’s gonna be known as the new American underdog,” predicts Mariucci.

Like Brosmer, Warner was an undrafted player. He became the first undrafted quarterback to win a Super Bowl and be named the MVP. During his long career, he set several other records, including the most single-game and single-season passing yards by an undrafted quarterback.
Warner threw for 484 yards while with the Arizona Cardinals against the 49ers in 2007. While Warner threw for more yards in other games, the record against the 49ers still stands, but Mariucci believes Brosmer will break it.
Brosmer hasn’t played this season enough to earn a PFSN QB Impact score. He has only played a handful of snaps so far. During the six games he has played, McCarthy has earned a grade of F, with a score of 52.5.
This game likely won’t be enough for McCarthy to lose his starting job, but Brosmer is auditioning for his career. He has to be hoping he plays well enough to attract attention and get a shot as a QB 1 or QB 2 with a team.
