NFL Coaching Rumors: Insiders Float 1 Head Coach Who May Be Available via Trade (and It’s Not Mike Tomlin)

The latest rumor surrounding a potential trade of one head coach, not Mike Tomlin, could cause shockwaves throughout the league.

The head coaching carousel is one of the craziest in recent memory. The two longest-tenured head coaches are no longer with their teams. Nine teams are looking for new head coaches, and potentially another. It would be a shock if this team made its coach available in a trade, but one insider floated the possibility of a crazy deal that doesn’t include esteemed HC Mike Tomlin.

Which NFL Team Could Potentially Trade for a New Head Coach per One Insider?

The Packers have a dilemma. HC Matt LaFleur only has one year left on his contract, and an extension doesn’t seem to be close. His future in Green Bay isn’t clear.

“The way, I would interpret it right now is, it’s up in the air,” said insider Adam Schefter.

Green Bay isn’t ready to fire LaFleur at this moment, but insider Mike Florio reported that Green Bay is testing the idea of seeing which team is willing to offer a trade package for LaFleur instead of extending him.

“We pointed out the possibility that the Packers want to see whether someone will contact them with interest in making a deal for LaFleur. And while LaFleur would have to be willing to participate in the two-step process (new team makes a deal with the Packers, new team makes a deal with LaFleur), it may be his only alternative to accepting an extension he doesn’t like or coaching the final year of his current deal,” said Florio.

The Packers suffered a heartbreaking exit in the playoffs. Holding a three-score lead on the road over their bitter rival, the Bears, is exactly where they wanted to be. Except they couldn’t hold on and took their most embarrassing loss of the season, and that’s saying something considering they lost to the Cleveland Browns.

LaFleur hasn’t quite gotten it done for Green Bay despite consistently winning games. With his contract set to expire after next season, the Packers aren’t ready to hand him the paycheck that he will command. He’ll likely be coaching on the last year of his deal unless the wild trade scenario comes into play and he’s coaching elsewhere on a new deal.

LaFleur is considered one of the most elite offensive minds in the NFL. He led Green Bay to the 7th-ranked offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric with a grade of 81.2. Teams will be lining up to hire him in the next cycle if he doesn’t end up with a new contract or elsewhere in a shocking trade this offseason. It’s going to be a wild offseason, and LaFleur’s departure would make it even crazier.
