The Washington Commanders are facing important cap decisions after finishing 5–12 in 2025. One projected offseason move would create substantial financial flexibility and allow the team to move off an underperforming asset.
The Athletic Projects Marshon Lattimore as Washington’s Most Logical 2026 Cap Cut
In a recent analysis piece from The Athletic, Commanders reporter Nicki Jhabvala named Marshon Lattimore as the Commanders’ most logical 2026 salary cap release.
Washington traded for Lattimore in November 2024, sending a 2025 third-round pick, fourth-round pick, and sixth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for the veteran corner and a fifth-round pick. The deal reflected an effort to strengthen the secondary during what appeared to be an accelerated competitive timeline.
Lattimore was one of four cornerbacks to make the Athletic’s list, which featured one cap casualty for all 32 NFL teams. Lattimore would likely land elsewhere if cut, given he is just 29. But it would likely come via a one-year prove-it deal.
High Expectations Following Trade Did Not Translate to Sustained Impact
The trade carried leaguewide attention given Lattimore’s résumé as a four-time Pro Bowler and former Defensive Rookie of the Year. Washington sought a reliable boundary corner capable of lockdown coverage against top receivers.

Shortly after arriving, Lattimore dealt with a hamstring injury that limited him to two regular-season games. He returned for the postseason and played in all three playoff games as Washington advanced to the NFC Championship.
In the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington was defeated 55–23. Lattimore matched up frequently with A.J. Brown, who recorded 6 receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown. His performance was widely considered a letdown.
Lattimore later tore his ACL on Nov. 2, ending his 2025 season. In PFSN’s Cornerback Impact (CBI) Rankings, he finished 36th league-wide but only played in nine games. The Commanders’ defense ranked 30th in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric.
His tenure also included legal issues. According to ESPN’s John Keim, Lattimore was arrested Jan. 7 in Lakewood, Ohio, on a possible charge of carrying a concealed weapon following a traffic stop.
Police records also listed a potential charge of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. He was booked and later released, and the matter remains under investigation. The Commanders stated they were aware of the arrest and had informed the NFL.

Drafted 11th overall in 2017, Lattimore earned four Pro Bowl selections during his time in New Orleans. The projected release centers on financial flexibility, with $18.5 million in potential savings if Washington decides to move on.
