Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd’s NFL career has been one of injuries since entering the league, and the 2025 season has been no different. The injured back has yet to appear in a game this year after suffering a hamstring injury during a preseason matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on August 16.
This landed him on the injured reserve list to open the season, and as of November 5, there is still no clear timetable for his return.
What Is MarShawn Lloyd’s Injury Update?
Packers coach Matt LaFleur shared an update in late October, saying he “wouldn’t count on (Lloyd’s return) anytime soon,” suggesting the team may not see the second-year running back on the field at all this season.
Lloyd’s hamstring injury initially seemed to be a standard soft-tissue issue that might’ve sidelined him for a few weeks, but recovery complications have extended his absence. Despite being eligible to be designated for return to practice from injured reserve, the Packers have yet to open that window, indicating that Lloyd remains far from game-ready.
He is a former USC player who was selected by Green Bay in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. His rookie season was disrupted by multiple setbacks, including an emergency appendectomy that forced him to miss much time. Across his first year and a half in the NFL, Lloyd has appeared in only one game, logging six carries for the Packers in 2024.
With Lloyd out, the Packers’ backfield has starter Josh Jacobs, who remains the lead back, while Emanuel Wilson is the No. 2. Jacobs has recorded 534 rushing yards for 10 touchdowns through eight games this season. His PFSN Impact Score is 81.3 with a B- grade and ranks 14th among all RBs.
Meanwhile, Wilson has made the most of the opportunity, delivering good performances when called upon. After averaging 4.9 yards per carry in 2024, Wilson has maintained that production in 2025, including an incredible performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in which he totaled 87 yards from scrimmage.
Meanwhile, third-string running back Chris Brooks has seen only limited field time. The Packers’ front office may use the upcoming stretch of the season to evaluate whether to add further backfield depth, especially with Lloyd’s return appearing increasingly unlikely.
Unless there is a big change in his recovery status, it appears the Packers may have to wait until 2026 to see if Lloyd can finally deliver on his long-awaited potential. The Packers host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 of the 2025 NFL season on November 10.
