While talent and on-field performance ultimately determine a player’s draft position, interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine can significantly impact perception.
Former USC Trojans wide receiver Makai Lemon may have hurt his chances of being the first wideout selected after what many are calling a disastrous interview.
Makai Lemon’s Combine Interview Draws Harsh Reaction From NFL World
On Friday morning, in the midst of the combine process, Lemon met with journalists to discuss his style of play, expectations for the NFL, players he has modeled his game after, and all things football-related.
While his answers themselves were fairly standard, it was his delivery that drew attention, and not for the right reasons.
Analysts questioned his demeanor, leading to a mix of roasting and criticism online.
“My new comp for Makai Lemon is now Kaa, the python from the Jungle Book,” joked sports medicine doctor Jeff Mueller.
However, it sounds like Lemon’s strange interview mannerisms extended to his interviews with teams. Former NFL defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko shared what he heard from a scout.
“I talked to a scout just now who said he didn’t know what Makai Lemon’s motive was behind his combine interviews but whoever advised the kid needs to be fired. ‘Absolutely bombed it’ word for word,” he wrote.
Chris Nimbley echoed that sentiment, reporting that multiple league sources told him Lemon’s in-person interviews in Indianapolis were “a disaster,” with those who spoke to him agreeing that Lemon “did not come across well.”
There is little doubt about Lemon’s talent. He is widely regarded as one of the top receivers in the 2026 NFL Draft class, going 16th to the New York Jets in PFSN’s latest seven-round mock draft, but his combine performance off the field may already be affecting his stock.
“I’ve circled the wagons on the Makai Lemon combine interviews. At this time, I can confirm that 4 teams have taken Lemon off their board due to his interview with the team. The teams were not disclosed,” NFL insider Robinson L. Whittmore reported.
For those unfamiliar with Lemon, his voice and speaking style were consistent with interviews from his time at USC. However, at the combine, his mannerisms and demeanor surprised some, as he appeared cocky and either avoided eye contact or stared ahead angrily. With teams placing significant value on locker-room chemistry and leadership presence, even minor concerns can affect draft positioning.
“FWIW Makai Lemon will still get drafted in the first round. You also aren’t expecting Sister Jean characteristics out of polarizing wideouts. Interviews do matter because you want these guys personalities to mesh with the locker room you already have,” Fehoko added.
Super Bowl champion Willie Colon compared Lemon to Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” before adding that he loved the wideout’s “intensity” and how locked in he was during his NFL Combine interview.

“Seeing a lot of takes on Makai Lemon’s personality coming out of combine week. Do you want your WRs well adjusted, humble and kind? Beyond Calvin and Julio don’t we want our WRs insane and wild?” analyst Russell Clay joked.
Lemon, who totaled 1,156 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns for the Trojans last season, may not experience a dramatic slide as much as Shedeur Sanders did last year, but multiple reports indicate that some teams have cooled on him.
Whether he ultimately gets selected in the first round remains to be seen, but the 21-year-old appears to have started the pre-draft process on the wrong foot and now faces the challenge of reassuring teams ahead of April.
