San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones went down with a leg injury in the third quarter as the 49ers were driving for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams.
The 49ers have suffered a number of injuries, including the loss of key defensive star Nick Bosa. Another critical injury is not what the team needs at this time as they look to improve on their 3-1 season record.
What Happened to Mac Jones?
Jones was tackled by a Los Angeles Rams defender and landed awkwardly as he fell down to the SoFi Stadium turf.
As the Amazon Prime telecast went to an ad, Jones was addressed on the field by the 49ers medical staff.

Jones was wearing a brace around his knee due to a PCL issue. But Jones managed to get off the field under his own power. Cameras caught Jones sitting up on the 49ers’ sidelines, and it looked like he might be able to come back into the game.
Losing Jones would mean that Adrian Martinez would have to come in and replace him. Martinez was a stellar player for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL and was the league’s 2024 MVP.
It looks like Jones’ issue might have been a brace issue rather than a knee tweak. Jones has his helmet on and seems like he’ll be fine to come back in.
Jones was up and sitting on the sidelines to make sure that his knee and brace were working properly. Jones played college ball at Alabama under head coach Nick Saban and started his NFL career with the New England Patriots.
Jones was in the midst of a strong redemption cameo with the 49ers. Entering Thursday, Jones ranked the 12th-best quarterback in the league based on PFSN’s QB Impact metric with an 80.4 (B-) grade this season. That was on pace to set a new career-high, surpassing his 78.3 QBi from his rookie season in 2021.
Jones’ grade likely only went up after a strong Thursday night in which he averaged 0.45 EPA per dropback in the first half, his highest in a half since his rookie season.
As Jones came back out onto the field, the entire 49ers coaching staff and team probably let out a big sigh of relief. Another injury to a key player is the last thing that San Francisco needs at this time. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and the team’s medical personnel will keep their eyes focused on Jones’ progress throughout the second half.
