Mac Jones Breaks Silence on 49ers’ QB Controversy, Whether He Should Start Over Brock Purdy

Mac Jones speaks out on the 49ers’ QB controversy after shining in Brock Purdy’s absence, sparking debate on who should lead San Francisco’s offense.

The San Francisco 49ers are exactly where they would have wanted to be in terms of win-loss record after signing Brock Purdy to a mega five-year extension. Yet the team faces an unexpected dilemma at quarterback.

Purdy has missed three games due to injury, and in his absence, Mac Jones has stepped in admirably, winning all three starts. His latest performance against the Rams was particularly impressive, fueling a debate among fans over whether Jones should continue as the team’s starter even when Purdy returns.

Mac Jones Addresses Starting Role, Respect for Brock Purdy Amid 49ers QB Controversy

Jones stepped in under center in Week 2 and delivered back-to-back wins for the team. While he threw one interception in those games, he also produced four touchdowns and 563 passing yards, proving he’s more than capable of pushing the ball downfield.

Purdy returned in Week 4 but wasn’t at full strength. The 49ers fell 26-21 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, raising concerns about whether their franchise quarterback was ready.

On Thursday Night Football, Purdy was rested again, and Jones stepped back into the spotlight. This time, he looked sharper than ever, avoiding turnovers while completing 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns, fueling speculation about a quarterback controversy.

When asked about the speculations in his post-game press conference, the former first-round pick downplayed the debate. Jones reiterated that Purdy is the starter and emphasized that his focus is simply on helping the 49ers stack wins and keep their playoff hopes alive.

“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” said Jones, who was signed as Purdy’s backup in the offseason. “Brock’s the starter of this team, and right now he’s dealing with something, and for him to go out there last week and play when you know he probably wasn’t at full health, he cares about this team. So, I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.

“I’ve been in his position, I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win, because at the end of the season, that could be the hit or miss between a playoff or not.”

There’s no denying Jones has been impressive, but Purdy hasn’t exactly struggled when healthy. He’s simply had limited opportunities, with only one full game at 100% this season. Even so, he currently ranks as the third-best quarterback in PFSN’s QB Impact metric, compared to Jones at No. 12.

Still, unless Purdy, who remains a week-to-week decision, is back to 100%, Jones will continue to have plenty of support to start. And if Purdy falters upon his return, the calls for Jones to take over permanently will only grow louder.

Regardless of how the situation plays out in San Francisco, Jones has proven himself to be a dependable starter in the NFL, and, if not with the 49ers, he is likely to earn a significant role elsewhere in 2025 and beyond.
