Green Bay Packers TE Luke Musgrave was on the path to being a dynasty TE1 before injury shortened his season and gave fellow rookie Tucker Kraft a chance to prove himself. The Packers are thrilled to have two talented sophomore tight ends on the roster. However, that’s not as good for fantasy football managers. How should we value Musgrave going forward?
Luke Musgrave’s Dynasty Outlook
Musgrave is a great example of how quickly a player’s fortunes can change. Musgrave looked like a worthwhile late-round dart throw due to the ambiguous offensive situation in Green Bay. Lacking any real veteran options at pass catcher, the top guy really could’ve been anyone. That made Musgrave worth targeting.

On a positive note, Musgrave immediately became the team’s TE1. The problem was that every time he looked to be on the precipice of breaking out, injuries reared their ugly heads.
Musgrave had two six-reception games in his first five contests. Although he only cracked double-digit fantasy points once over that span, the usage was enough to paint an optimistic picture and warrant attention in fantasy leagues. At multiple points during the past season, I had Musgrave as a priority waiver wire pickup.
Musgrave looked good! He was seeing downfield targets and was dynamic after the catch. He seemed poised to capture the Packers’ TE1 job for the foreseeable future. Then, the injuries struck. Musgrave missed several weeks with a lacerated kidney. That forced fellow rookie TE Kraft to step up.
During Musgrave’s absence, Kraft was a better fantasy asset than Musgrave was. Although Musgrave was the higher-drafted player, the Packers don’t exactly have allegiance to anyone. They’re just going to play the better guy.
Musgrave returned for Week 18 and the Packers’ two playoff games, but he did not get his job back. We can chalk up his 17% snap share in Week 18 to him being eased back, but the 33% and 36% snap shares in the playoffs aren’t exactly encouraging.

It’s great for the Packers that Kraft proved to be just as good, if not better, than Musgrave. However, it’s not great for fantasy managers who just want one of these tight ends to have the job.
This is likely going to be an annoying situation for fantasy. With both tight ends having already proven themselves, it’s possible we could be looking at a committee situation.

Musgrave is an incredible athlete, running a 4.61-second 40-yard dash at 6’6”, 253 pounds. He’ll be just 24 years old this year. There’s just so much time for him to become a top NFL tight end, even if it’s not with the Packers.
Given that Musgrave is unlikely to garner much in a deal, the best course of action is to hold and wait and see how things play out.
