A Longtime NFL Executive Throws Praise on Spencer Rattler, Ranking Him Higher Than Bo Nix and Michael Penix

Spencer Rattler once lost his QB1 status at Oklahoma. But an NFL executive thinks the South Carolina QB is better than two 2023 Heisman finalists.

There was a time when Spencer Rattler was considered a top-five NFL Draft pick. That was before his falling out with Oklahoma and eventual transfer to South Carolina.

Even in an upcoming draft class that doesn’t list Rattler near the top three, that still didn’t prevent one longtime NFL executive from praising him over two potential first-round picks on Monday.

Former NFL Executive Says Spencer Rattler Is “Better Than Bo Nix and Michael Penix”

Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer spoke with a longtime NFL front office exec about the upcoming quarterback class.

While the focus ahead of April’s draft has centered on Heisman Trophy winners Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, plus where Drake Maye could end up, Breer was reminded of a forgotten early projected No. 1 pick in Rattler.

“My hot take is that Spencer Rattler is better than Bo Nix and Penix. And I know other people who feel the same way,” the executive said to Breer.

Nix has seen his name shoot up mock draft boards as a potential selection after the first 10 picks. PFN’s Tony Catalina has the Oregon standout and Heisman finalist going 11th to the Minnesota Vikings. Michael Penix, Jr., meanwhile, has been mocked as either a high second-day selection or a player who could potentially sneak into the back of the first round.

But now, a front office representative believes Rattler is better than both — which implies that the Gamecocks star and former Sooner could be worth a first-round selection after all.

What Happened to Rattler? Looking at His Journey to the NFL

Rattler entered Norman, Oklahoma, as a Netflix star and heavily-hyped true freshman quarterback in 2019.

The five-star prospect out of talent-rich Scottsdale, Arizona, was one of the stars of QB1. That documentary series depicted Rattler as an overconfident yet ultra-talented passer.

Rattler rose to prominence early for the Sooners by producing a 3,031-yard, 28-touchdown campaign during the truncated 2020 season. Those numbers sparked conversations of Rattler potentially becoming the Heisman winner and the No. 1 overall pick for the 2022 draft.

But his 2021 campaign started with a one-touchdown, two-interception afternoon against Tulane in a narrow 40-35 win. Even after a 5-0 start, Rattler was eventually benched in favor of a former teammate, Williams. The talented but polarizing passer was criticized for his inconsistency at OU, which eventually led to a change of scenery for Rattler.

He has since rebuilt himself as a multi-time 3,000-yard passer in the Palmetto State. Rattler threw for 3,026 yards in 2022, followed by a 3,186-yard campaign last season. He went on to throw for 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in his two seasons with South Carolina.

However, Rattler is still involved in a deep quarterback class ahead of the 2024 draft. PFN Draft Analyst Ian Cummings has Rattler listed as a Day 3 prospect, yet “he could feasibly rise into Day 2 range with a good offseason.”

That offseason includes the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine. An impressive showing there could catapult Rattler back into the first-round conversations among draft experts and scouts.

I find it strange how everyone trashes Rattler for starting the year off iffy when he was replaced by Williams and for his attitude, but treats Williams like the 2nd coming while his last year was trash and it was not just the team around him. And his demeanor and attitude is being shown to be much worse than Rattler ever was. At least Rattler has grown and matured. Williams has turned into a Diva already. I will put money on Williams being a bust and Rattler being better 3 years from now. BTW. Beats fans better be ready for a hold out. Wait and see.
