The Detroit Lions enter the season’s final stretch with fans on edge after a series of lackluster performances and, most notably, an injury to Sam LaPorta that made their playoff hopes even more uncertain.
It is worth remembering that LaPorta’s injury was expected to keep him out for at least four games, but Dan Campbell recently told reporters that the player will be “out for a while.” As a result, the latest 2026 NFL Draft predictions have taken on greater importance, with the franchise potentially choosing a tight end to add roster depth next year.
Lions Mock Draft Picks NC State’s Tight End After Sam LaPorta’s Injury
Despite these concerns, it is worth noting that the Lions still have a chance to stay strong in the current regular season, considering the capabilities of their offensive unit. However, their 7-5 record would certainly be better if the TE were available for the rest of the season.
To address their current needs, Brock Wright and Ross Dwelley are being tasked with filling in for LaPorta in the coming weeks. Wright brings extensive NFL experience to the position. However, the uncertainty surrounding LaPorta has also turned attention to the NFL Draft, with PFSN’s Ian Cummings predicting that the Lions will select NC State tight end Justin Joly.
Analysts and fans following College Football consider Joly the top senior TE in the 2026 draft. Formerly a wide receiver, Joly combines his 251 lb. frame with notable athleticism.
Joly stands out as a rare athlete, being a reliable target for receiving passes while also breaking away from opponents despite his considerable physical size. He often receives over ten passes per game, becoming a frequent threat.
The NC State superstar is one of the top performers in college football this season, with 47 receptions and 468 yards in 11 games, averaging 42.4 receiving yards per game (close to the 50.8 he averaged last season).
Given these impressive statistics, the Lions’ offense, which currently rank 8th in the PFSN Offense Impact metric with a B- grade, has a good chance of strengthening with the arrival of Joly, an athlete who has demonstrated his ability to fill the void left by LaPorta and keep the TE position at a high level.
Looking ahead, the opening game of Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys could prove decisive in determining the Lions’ fate for the rest of the season. After this matchup, the team will also face the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears before the end of the regular season.
