Super Bowl Champion Puts Lions on ‘Fraud Alert’ After Detroit Loses Another Massive Game

After a 16-9 loss to the Eagles, Super Bowl champion questions the Lions’ legitimacy and sparks debate about Detroit Lions’s fading NFC hopes.

The Detroit Lions entered Week 11 desperate for a statement win, something to boost their confidence and solidify their place as contenders in the NFC. Unfortunately, they suffered a tough 16-9 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, which knocked them out of the playoff race and raised lingering doubts about whether this team is truly ready for the postseason.

After spending the last few seasons redefining their identity under Dan Campbell, this loss felt like a significant setback at the worst possible moment.

Chris Canty Sounds the Alarm on Detroit Lions’ Championship Narrative

On ESPN’s “Unsportsmanlike,” former Super Bowl-winning defensive lineman Chris Canty didn’t hesitate to raise the stakes on Detroit’s mounting issues. “I’m starting to put the Lions on fraud alert,” Canty declared. “Anytime they have a big game, they end up spitting the bit… We keep assigning this championship-level contention to the Detroit Lions and they keep disappointing us every single year.”

Canty’s criticism went beyond one bad night. He pointed to Detroit’s growing inconsistency, explaining, “There’s too much variance in what we get from them from game to game… I don’t know who the hell the Detroit Lions want to be on the offensive side of the ball.” That identity crisis was on full display against the Eagles, with the Lions finishing 0-for-5 on fourth down and converting just three of 13 third-down attempts.

At the heart of the offensive struggle was the quarterback, who had one of the most challenging games of his career. Bundled up in double gloves to fend off the cold and clearly uncomfortable, Jared Goff completed 14 of 37 passes for 255 yards, tossing one touchdown and an interception, resulting in a QBR of just 9.5, his second-lowest since joining the Lions.

The Eagles kept the pressure on him throughout the game, leading to Goff’s worst completion percentage (37.8%) in his decade-long career.

“The fourth downs were the whole thing,” Goff admitted postgame. “You’d like to think if we got a fourth down or two, it changes the game.”

Goff’s inability to function outside a clean pocket has become a recurring storyline this season. The Lions’ offense, which once averaged over 30 points per game, has cratered against elite defenses, posting nine points in Philadelphia and showing the same issues that plagued them in losses to Minnesota and Green Bay. The absence of injured tight end Sam LaPorta only exposed deeper structural problems.

Canty didn’t hold back, stating that Detroit’s struggles on fourth down prevent them from being seen as a serious Super Bowl contender. Even though Campbell took back the play-calling duties, the offense seemed disjointed and out of sync, raising quiet but growing concerns about whether some internal coaching changes might be needed.

Still, the Lions’ season is far from doomed. Detroit faces the New York Giants next, followed by critical divisional matchups against Chicago and Green Bay, both teams with brutal remaining schedules of their own. An intense closing stretch could tighten the NFC race and give Detroit a path back into the postseason conversation.

Goff is ranked seventh among quarterbacks in the NFL in PFSN’s QB Impact Score through nine games, with an 85.0 grade. Under Goff’s leadership, the Lions are ranked ninth in offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric.

But as Canty’s words echo across the league, one thing is clear: the Lions are officially under scrutiny. Whether they silence the “fraud alert” label or validate it will define the rest of their season and perhaps the direction of the franchise moving forward.
