Lions Star Amon-Ra St. Brown Reacts to David Montgomery’s Surprise Trade to Texans

Amon-Ra St. Brown reacts to the news of Detroit Lions trading running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans before free agency.

The NFL offseason is beginning to ramp up, and before free agency begins next week, trades are flying around the league. One team, the Houston Texans, has been at the center of the two most recent ones. The latest trade Houston made was for Detroit Lions’ running back David Montgomery.

With Montgomery being a veteran of the Lions locker room, fellow offensive playmaker Amon-Ra St. Brown reacted accordingly.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Posts His Reaction to David Montgomery’s Trade

Since being added to the Lions roster in 2023, Montgomery has been a game-changing force on the offense. Although he may not have been that top-tier RB like other teams have, he was the perfect complement to Jahmyr Gibbs, who was drafted in 2023. The two created a dynamic duo that took the NFL by storm.

Adding that running game with St. Brown, who was a clear star WR on the roster, the Lions offense was one of the scariest in the league.

St. Brown was drafted by the Lions in 2021 and had to deal with a tough first year. Detroit was 3-13-1, and although there was improvement in 2022, the Lions were still not what we know they are today.

Their real winning began in 2023, and one reason was Montgomery’s addition to the team. So, losing a veteran in the locker room and a player associated with winning always hurts, and St. Brown went to Instagram to voice that.

On his Instagram story, St. Brown posted a screenshot of Montgomery being traded to the Texans and added a heartbreak emoji.

Clearly, this move is a painful one for Detroit’s star WR, and probably the rest of the team. During his time with the Lions, Montgomery was a really RB for the team.

In 2023, when he arrived in Detroit, Montgomery finished 12th overall in PFSN’s RB Impact Metric. Even when Gibbs’ snaps began to increase in 2024, Montgomery was still really good in the offense and finished only one spot lower at 13.

Last season was really where things changed. Instead of his normal ranking, the veteran RB was ranked 23rd overall. From 2024 onward, there was a massive drop-off.

A change of scenery for Montgomery made sense for all parties involved, and now with the Texans, he will be RB1, replacing Joe Mixon. For the Lions, time will tell whether this move works out, and now the team needs to find a backup behind Gibbs in the offense.
