Lions Star Amon-Ra St. Brown Breaks Silence on Doing Donald Trump’s Dance in Front of the President

When Amon-Ra St. Brown scored a touchdown for the Detroit Lions against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, his celebration became more than just a dance. With President Donald Trump watching from the stands, the receiver’s homage went viral, sparking immediate debate across social media.

Now, St. Brown has explained the reasoning behind the controversial salute, clarifying that his intentions were much simpler than many fans assumed.

Why Did Amon-Ra St. Brown’s Presidential Salute Cause Such a Stir?

On the most recent episode of the “St. Brown brothers'” podcast, Amon-Ra directly addressed why he performed the dance. He said, “First of all, if I offended anyone, I do apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone. It was just that we were having fun. If any President was at that game, if they had a dance, I would have done it.”

St. Brown’s reasoning was straightforward: he was caught up in the excitement of a unique moment. Scoring a touchdown in a 44-22 victory is one thing, but doing it with a sitting president in attendance is an unusual experience, and his lighthearted gesture reflected the situation.

While not everyone agreed with the choice of celebration, the incident highlights the nature of self-expression on the field. Football is an emotional game, and players often use these opportunities to showcase their personalities. In this case, St. Brown’s dance was a spontaneous moment of fun that inadvertently paid homage to the president.

Beyond the viral moment, St. Brown had a solid outing against the Commanders. In addition to his touchdown, he caught five passes on eight targets for 58 yards. That performance put him second in receiving for Detroit on the day, just behind Jameson Williams, who had an impressive day with six catches on seven targets for 119 yards and a touchdown.

According to PFSN’s wide receiver impact metric, St. Brown’s performance has earned him an impact score of 89.4, a B+ grade. That mark ties for the second-best of his career, trailing only the A- he received from PFSN in 2023.

During that standout 2023 season, St. Brown was a force, catching 119 passes on 164 targets for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns. His elite play earned him both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Through nine games of the current campaign, St. Brown has already recorded 64 receptions on 82 targets for 673 yards and eight touchdowns. If he continues averaging around seven catches and 77 yards per game, he would be on pace to surpass his 2023 numbers, likely earning him a fourth-straight Pro Bowl nod and a third-consecutive All-Pro appearance.
