With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway in North America, we’re seeing a lot of sports crossovers, and a recent debate between Lionel Messi and Eli Manning got significant attention. Falling right between the NBA Finals and the NFL regular season, the FIFA World Cup is receiving maximum attention from American fans, and as such, debates over greatness are forming — not all of which are well-received.
Lionel Messi vs. Eli Manning Debate Draws Heated Reactions
The crew of the “Dan Patrick Show” had some sports crossover fun as the World Cup picks up speed. A peculiar debate that was presented between Argentine soccer legend Messi and New York Giants icon Manning: whose career would you want?
The only thing Messi and Manning have in common is that they earned their fame through sport. Otherwise, the two live in vastly different worlds: Manning enjoys a calm retirement after his NFL career, while Messi constantly manages life as one of the most famous people on the planet, and has had a vastly superior career compared to the Giants legend.
The internet, however, didn’t take kindly to the question, as many bashed the debate.

Manning established himself as a Giants icon by being the only quarterback in NFL history to beat the great Tom Brady in a Super Bowl twice. He spent his entire career in the Big Apple, bagging two rings, two Super Bowl MVP awards, four Pro Bowls, and the 2016 Walter Payton Award.
Messi, meanwhile, saw accolades on a global level. The international superstar has won eight Ballon d’Ors, a FIFA World Cup, and countless other individual honors, in addition to numerous league titles across two continents, including four UEFA Champions League titles.
Messi will go down as arguably the greatest soccer player to ever walk the earth, while Manning isn’t even one of the top 10 greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
While both veterans carved out very respectable careers in their respective disciplines, fans and online analysts largely agreed that Manning’s achievements are nowhere near Messi’s.
