What Is the Legion of Boom? Revisiting the Seahawks’ Legendary Secondary

A look back at the Legion of Boom, Seattle’s dominant secondary, and what the unit accomplished during its run.

Very few NFL defenses earn a nickname, and even fewer achieve one that truly sticks. Seattle’s defense in the early to mid-2010s, however, left fans no choice, as the Legion of Boom continuously terrorized opposing offenses. Here is a closer look at the legendary secondary and what it accomplished during that era.

What Was the Legion of Boom?

The Legion of Boom was headlined by three standout defensive backs: Richard Sherman, a shutdown corner and future Hall of Famer, along with rangy, hard-hitting safeties Earl Thomas III and Kam Chancellor.

The unit emerged in 2011, and in the first season, all three suited up for the Seahawks. Despite Thomas and Chancellor being second-year players and Sherman a rookie, the group performed with the poise of seasoned veterans.

Led by its dominant young secondary, Seattle’s defense ranked No. 8 overall that season, according to PFSN metrics. The group also ranked second in total forced turnovers (31) and sixth in fewest points allowed (315).

The defense built an impressive reputation in a short time that warranted a nickname. Chancellor and the rest of the secondary embraced it. During a radio interview in the summer of 2012, the name “Legion of Boom” was mentioned, and, in Chancellor’s words, “it jumped out.”

Chancellor said the Legion of Boom name “fits the description of our unit, our brotherhood of love, trust, honesty, respect.” He added that those elements “bring out everything in our group.” For a unit already among the league’s best, the new name provided even more motivation.

Although Chancellor did not directly reference the “boom” aspect of the nickname, fans quickly recognized that Seattle’s secondary was fast, physical, and capable of delivering punishing hits on any play.

In 2012, the Legion of Boom improved further. The defense ranked No. 5 overall, again forced the second-most turnovers (31), and climbed to second in points allowed (245). The 2013 season, however, was when the group truly cemented its legacy.

That year, Seattle ranked No. 1 in PFSN’s Defense Impact metric. The unit led the league in turnovers (39), allowed the fewest passing yards (2,752) and the fourth-fewest rushing yards (1,626), while posting the NFL’s highest sack rate. The Legion of Boom was dominant, and the entire defense contributed to its success.

Seattle finished the regular season 13-3 and secured the NFC’s top seed. The Seahawks then defeated the Saints and 49ers to earn a trip to Super Bowl 48.

Facing Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos was no easy task, but Seattle’s defense overwhelmed Denver in a 43-8 victory. The unit set the tone early, forcing a safety on the opening possession and returning an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter.

For the next four seasons, the Legion of Boom and Seattle’s defense maintained consistency, finishing No. 3, No. 7, No. 6, and No. 7 between 2014 and 2017.

Although the group did not secure another Lombardi Trophy, the Legion of Boom proved to be one of the most formidable defensive units in NFL history.
