Lavonte David Reveals Mike Evans Knew About His Retirement Decision Before He Joined 49ers

Jenna Laine’s X post led to Lavonte David explaining why Mike Evans was not at his Buccaneers retirement press conference.

Retirement decisions like Lavonte David’s usually stay quiet until the moment arrives. This one did too, mostly, but one of the first people who already knew was Mike Evans. David officially announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending a 14-year career in Tampa Bay. When Evans wasn’t spotted at David’s press conference, an explanation followed.

Why Mike Evans Missed Lavonte David’s Retirement Press Conference

After David’s retirement became official, ESPN Buccaneers reporter Jenna Laine shared on X that Evans was one of the first former teammates to react. That led to an X account asking why Evans was not at David’s retirement press conference, which is when David’s explanation surfaced.

“Mike already knew I was gonna make this decision before anybody honestly, before his situation was even going on,” David said. “So that’s just how tight me and Mike is.”

That response added context to what, at first glance, looked like a notable absence. Evans’ departure to the San Francisco 49ers was one of the bigger surprises of free agency, but David made it clear his retirement decision had already been shared with Evans well before that move unfolded.

It also says plenty about the relationship between the two players. David and Evans were not just longtime teammates. They were two of the defining leaders of the most successful stretches in Buccaneers history, helping Tampa Bay reach Super Bowl 55 and win multiple division titles.

Reflecting on Lavonte David’s Hall of Fame-Caliber Career in Tampa Bay

David’s retirement closes the book on one of the most productive careers any linebacker of his generation put together. He spent all 14 of his NFL seasons with the Buccaneers and remained a steady force well into the back half of his career. This season, David ranked 51st in PFSN’s Linebacker Impact Metric.

The production never really slipped. Since entering the league in 2012, David ranks first in solo tackles among all players and is one of only four players in league history to record at least 40 sacks, 30 forced fumbles, and 10 interceptions. He also retired tied with Derrick Brooks for Tampa Bay’s franchise tackle record at 1,714.

That kind of résumé is why David earned so much respect inside league circles, even if he was often overlooked in broader national conversations. He was consistent, durable, and versatile for more than a decade, and he did it all with the same organization.
