NFL Insider Names 2 Pro Bowlers As Potential Options at QB for Browns To Challenge Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland’s quarterback battle could heat up if the Browns pursue Kyler Murray or Kirk Cousins to challenge Shedeur Sanders.

The Cleveland Browns are searching for answers at quarterback. They gave rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders chances at QB, but neither impressed much. Sanders is likely the starter heading into the season, but one NFL insider provided two potential Pro Bowl options for the Browns to challenge Sanders for the job.

Browns Could Pit Shedeur Sanders vs. Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray

NFL insider Albert Breer thinks there’s a chance that the Browns will go out and add a quarterback. Two options he suggested remain free agents: Kirk Cousins and Kyler Murray, both of whom have made the Pro Bowl multiple times.

“I would remind everybody of what Andrew Berry did last year, which was completely repurpose the quarterback room. I wouldn’t close the book on them acquiring someone else… There are still guys out there like Kyler Murray, like Kirk Cousins,” said Breer.

The Browns could bring in some competition for their quarterback room. Last year, they entered training camp with four quarterbacks vying for the spot. Joe Flacco won the job initially, but lost it to Gabriel, who then got hurt, and Sanders ran away with the starting QB job.

Sanders finished as the 46th-ranked quarterback in PFSN’s QB Impact Score while Gabriel ranked one place lower at No. 47. This is far from ideal for the Browns, and they’ll need to decide whether they can bank on a major turnaround from their current quarterback room or adding a veteran like Cousins or Murray is the best path forward.

Both Cousins and Murray are coming off far-from-productive seasons. Cousins was meant to be the answer in Atlanta, but was benched in 2024 and served as Michael Penix Jr.’s backup for the last year and a half until Penix’s ACL tear. Murray dealt with the injury bug for most of the season, only appearing in five games. But Murray and Cousins have proven they can play at a high level in the NFL, and the Browns seldom have that kind of QB play.

Cleveland has made it a priority to add to their offensive line after reaching agreements with former Packers offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins and former Chargers guard Zion Johnson. Committing to the trenches will be pivotal for whatever QB is under center for Cleveland in 2026. If it’s Sanders or Cousins at QB, the Browns can still say they have a Pro Bowl QB, and only time will tell which one it is.
