Kevin Stefanski’s Browns Future in Doubt After Rumors of Cleveland’s Interest in Hiring Legendary HC

As the Browns endure another frustrating season, rumblings suggest coach Kevin Stefanski could be replaced by a legend.

As a second consecutive losing season for the Cleveland Browns pushes the 2023 11-6 campaign further into the rearview mirror, there are unsurprisingly whispers regarding head coach Kevin Stefanski’s job security.

The Browns still have three games remaining to ensure they at least surpass last season’s abysmal three-win tally, but there is little doubt that a top-to-bottom assessment of the organization will begin as soon as the final whistle sounds in Week 18.

Kevin Stefanski’s Roller-Coaster Browns Coaching Tenure Could Be Nearing Its End

Due to his position as the head of the Browns’ on-field football operation, Stefanski will naturally face heavy scrutiny.

The 43-year-old offensive-minded coach arrived as a fresh face in 2020 and immediately set high expectations. Stefanski earned AP Coach of the Year honors in his first season after leading Cleveland to an 11-5 regular-season record, along with its first playoff victory since 1994 in a 48-37 triumph over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC wild-card game.

After posting a combined 15-19 record over the next two seasons, Stefanski essentially replicated his strong debut by guiding the Browns to the aforementioned 11-6 mark and another playoff berth in 2023.

While Cleveland was dispatched by rookie sensation C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans in a 45-14 loss in the AFC wild-card round, Stefanski appeared to have stabilized his standing for the time being. That grip, however, has proven elusive over the past season-plus.

While several factors are to blame — including a disastrous tenure from embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson, who posted a 51.1 (F) grade in PFSN’s QBi metric over seven games before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in 2024 — the reality is that ownership’s patience could be wearing thin following the Browns’ second straight double-digit-loss season.

Stefanski’s Seat Could Get Even Warmer Due to Coaching Legend’s Potential Candidacy

To make matters more intriguing, rumors have surfaced suggesting Stefanski’s hold on his job could be further jeopardized by a legendary name in NFL coaching circles — Bill Belichick.

In addition to his unparalleled résumé with the New England Patriots, Belichick began his head coaching career in Cleveland from 1991 to 1995.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Belichick, who endured a rocky debut season as a first-time college head coach at North Carolina, remains highly regarded by upper-level personnel across multiple NFL organizations.

While speculation surrounding head coaches and general managers is common with Black Monday just weeks away, the circumstances surrounding the Browns and Stefanski — particularly Belichick’s potential candidacy — lend the chatter added credibility, a point ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo acknowledged on air Thursday.

The Browns’ remaining opponents are the Bills (home), Steelers (home), and Bengals (road), matchups that could realistically all end in losses and leave Stefanski’s team with a 3-14 record for the second consecutive season.

Stefanski’s Job Security Remains in Question, Regardless of Belichick Factor

Belichick’s return to the NFL is far from guaranteed. The six-time Super Bowl champion still has two guaranteed years remaining on his five-year contract with the Tar Heels and remains a candidate to continue at the college level in 2026.

Regardless of Belichick’s future, Stefanski could still find himself on the hot seat in Cleveland once the regular season concludes.

Strong performances over the final three games would help his case, but Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam could still elect to move in a new direction, installing a head coach who would help shape the franchise’s future, including selecting a potential quarterback of the future in April’s NFL Draft.
