Kevin O’Connell ‘Excited’ About Having Jonathan Greenard on Vikings After Openly Shopping Pro Bowler

Kevin O'Connell confirms he expects Jonathan Greenard to remain with the Vikings, ending trade rumors for the star defender.

There is something quietly complicated about the way Jonathan Greenard fits into the Minnesota Vikings’ offseason, like a story that refuses to be reduced to a single chapter. While the financials make those discussions understandable, Kevin O’Connell’s recent comments suggest a deeper investment. Greenard is not just another movable piece; he is woven into what this team is trying to become under Brian Flores.

If you only look at Greenard’s 2025 stat line, you might miss him entirely. Three sacks do not tell much of a story, at least not the right one. But football, especially in Brian Flores’ defense, is not always about the clean finish.

His 18.1% pressure rate was quietly dominant, the kind of number that reshapes plays before they ever have a chance to develop. He is often the first crack in the structure, forcing quarterbacks to drift, rush, and make decisions they did not intend to make. Someone else might get the sack, but the origin of the chaos more often than not traces back to him. Flores’ system, which has a PFSN Defense Impact Score of 88.2, thrives on that kind of unpredictability.

Kevin O’Connell Believes Jonathan Greenard Is Central to Vikings’ Vision

Then there is everything you do not see on film. Greenard has become a steady foundation in a defense still stitching together its long-term identity. The way he prepares, communicates, and absorbs the quiet weight of leadership without making it performative all adds up. Maybe that is why O’Connell spoke on the matter Monday in Phoenix.

“Yeah, I expect him to be part of our team,” O’Connell said. “I would just say, I’m excited about Jonathan Greenard in Year 3 with us and excited about where our team’s going to go with him as a big part of our defense. The business side of the NFL gets talked about a lot, but my role and the importance of the relationship side of things will always be paramount with all of our players, especially one of my captains like J.G.”

The business side of this feels, at times, slightly at odds with the football side. A $22,150,000 cap hit in 2026 will always invite conversation. That is just the math of the league. O’Connell did not pretend otherwise, acknowledging the constant churn of roster decisions and the reality that every player exists somewhere between value and cost.

There is also the matter of timing. Greenard’s season ended early after shoulder surgery, limiting him to 12 games, but even in that shortened stretch, he compiled 10 tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits. His recovery is reportedly on track, which only sharpens the sense that his best work in this system might still be ahead.
