Who Are Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s Parents?

Herbert’s parents are Holly and Mark Herbert. The couple still lives just a 10-minute drive from Autzen Stadium, where Herbert starred as their quarterback at the University of Oregon. Justin turned down offers from Northern Arizona, Portland State, Montana State, and Nevada to attend the University of Oregon.

Mark was a football and track athlete at University of Montana. He also coached Herbert on his youth teams and told ESPN that his son has “one of the 32 most coveted jobs in the world.”

Mark’s father, Roger Herbert, was a sprinter at Oregon State University and became a track coach. Mark and Roger both taught high school biology.

Holly attended Washington State University, but did not participate in athletics while enrolled. However, Herbert’s maternal grandfather, Rich Schwab, was a star receiver for University of Oregon from 1960-63. Schwab was a key role model for Herbert growing up.

“I just remember all the people who would come to me and tell me how great of a man he was, and I knew it,” Justin said of Schwab. “Everything he taught me, I try to live by every day to make sure I honor him.”

Schwab passed away in 2018 due to complications of a stroke.

Herbert’s parents wrote a sweet letter to their son as he was starting his NFL career as part of the “Dear Rookies” series.

“As you begin this next chapter, a chapter you have dreamed about and worked hard for, we just want you to know how very proud we are of you,” the letter read. “Justin, you are living your dream, not out of luck, but hard work, commitment and determination.”

They also passed on six pieces of advice to Justin:

  • Remember The Golden Rule: As you know this was important to Papa Rich. He had a way of making anyone he was talking to feel special. You can honor him by passing that on to those you encounter every day.”)
  • Always do your best.
  • Strive to do better.
  • Never give up.
  • Be true to yourself: Being real is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and others. Who you are has gotten you to this place.
  • Have fun: We know you are competitive and ready to give this all that you have. Enjoy the process!

Who Are Herbert’s Siblings?

Herbert has two brothers: an older brother, Mitchell, and a younger brother, Patrick.

When Herbert was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the first people he thanked were his brothers.

“Thank you for not only being my receivers but for being my best friends. I wouldn’t be here without you,” Herbert shared in an Instagram post to his brothers.

Herbert was joined by his brother, Patrick, for his final season at Oregon. Patrick is a tight end who turned down offers from several other prominent college programs to play with his brother and the Ducks.

“I grew up here in Eugene and always loved the Ducks, so to play for this program is a very special deal, just as it was for the rest of my family,” Patrick said on his decision to join the Ducks.

Across his four seasons at Oregon, Patrick caught 31 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns.

Mitchell also played college football, as he was a wide receiver at Montana State who had 20 touchdown receptions across his collegiate career.

What Is Herbert’s Net Worth?

Herbert is the No. 14-ranked quarterback in the NFL this season, according to PFN’s QB+ metric, with a 78.9 (C+) grade. Herbert ranked fourth in the league over the last four weeks of the season and may well be peaking just in time for the NFL playoffs.

While he has performed like a top-15 quarterback, is Herbert paid like one?

Yes, Herbert is the seventh-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. His contract has an average annual value of $52.5 million.

In 2023, Herbert signed a monumental five-year, $262.5 million extension with the Chargers. The deal included a hefty $16 million signing bonus and a staggering $218 million guaranteed.

As a result, Herbert has a net worth of approximately $40 million. This estimate might be a bit low though, as he has already earned $96,199,753 from his NFL contracts alone.

This doesn’t include his numerous endorsements with companies such as Callaway Golf, Dr. Squatch, Fanatics, Nike, Panini, SoFi, TCL, and Verizon Communications among others.

It’s safe to say that Herbert is thriving — on and off the field.

Chiefs-Chargers Week 1 Preview

The division rivalry between the Chiefs and Chargers should be a treat for the São Paulo audience, as the teams have routinely produced competitive games in recent years.

For both teams, it starts at quarterback. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes remains one of the league’s best, having already won three Super Bowls before turning 30.

Meanwhile, Justin Herbert has the stats to rank among the game’s top passers but has yet to win a playoff game in his five-year career. He’ll be looking to change that narrative this season, starting with a statement against the Chiefs.

Kansas City’s passing attack will look similar to last season, with wideouts Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster complementing All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. Their top receiver, Rashee Rice, is out against the Chargers while serving a suspension.

Los Angeles’ receiving corps isn’t much better, though second-year receiver Ladd McConkey is back after an impressive rookie season in which he caught 82 passes for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. He’ll be Herbert’s No. 1 target.

Per our metrics, the Chargers will have an upper hand defensively. Coordinator Jesse Minter leads a unit that flies to the ball, anchored by pass rusher Khalil Mack and safety Derwin James.

The Chiefs’ defense graded out at a C last season but will look to improve behind defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie. Both are among the best at their positions, but need help from a young, unproven supporting cast.

As for the outcome, the Chiefs simply have the Chargers’ number. Los Angeles usually puts up a fight but falls short in the end. That shouldn’t change, even in Week 1 on South American soil.

Prediction: Chiefs 24, Chargers 20
