The NFL has finalized its decision on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice’s suspension. In July, Rice was officially sentenced to five years of probation, including 30 days of jail time spread over that period, for his role in a multi-vehicle crash on a Dallas, Texas, highway in 2024.
NFL insider Adam Schefter has now provided an update on Rice’s status, announcing that the receiver will miss a significant portion of the 2025 season.
Adam Schefter Provides An Update on Rashee Rice’s Impending Suspension
The NFL has been considering a suspension for Rice since a judge officially ruled on his case stemming from a multi-vehicle crash in Dallas in July that involved six vehicles. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Rice’s suspension, and based on past precedent, many believed it would be anywhere from two to four games.
However, as the NFL announced on Wednesday, Rice has officially been suspended six games without pay.
While Rice was expected to face a suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, it was initially thought that the discipline would be administered after his hearing with the league on September 30.
Instead, Rice will miss Weeks 1-6, resulting in a major blow to the Chiefs’ offense, as he is one of the team’s top, if not the best, receivers. With the receiver set to return in Week 7, he will miss key games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions before being able to suit up against the Las Vegas Raiders.

After being selected by Kansas City in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rice quickly emerged as a star, catching 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. He was on pace for an even stronger 2024 season but suffered a torn ACL in the team’s fourth game.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will be without one of his top targets for the first six games of the season, meaning Kansas City’s passing attack will almost certainly take a hit.
The Chiefs open the year on Friday, September 5, against the Chargers at 8:00 p.m. EST, facing their AFC West rival without Rice. The game will be available to watch on YouTube. All eyes will be on Mahomes and the Chiefs to see how they fare without their top offensive weapon.
Rice’s Fantasy Outlook for 2025 NFL Season
Rashee Rice’s ADP continues to drop amid uncertainty surrounding his incoming suspension. The Chiefs’ star is now being drafted outside the top 24 players at the position and will likely fall further before the start of the season. Still, he does offer WR1 value when on the field and should be available for the first four games of the season, before returning for the fantasy playoffs.
In the fifth round, rosters with two star receivers and two star running backs can take a shot on Rice and would have a great chance to start 4-0, given the bonus WR1 production. The Chiefs’ star was the WR2 over the first three weeks of the 2024 season before getting hurt, and has had a full preseason to ramp up.
Players like Tetairoa McMillan, Isiah Pacheco, and Calvin Ridley are far safer bets, and they are being taken just after Rice. However, Travis Kelce, Baker Mayfield, and George Pickens are also being taken near Rice and will all be replaceable later in drafts.
None of those six players offers more upside than Rice when on the field, though, and getting the Chiefs receiver back for the fantasy playoffs would be a huge boost when it matters most. The risk with Rice is obvious, but you can win games without your fifth-round pick, and there’s no point making the playoffs if you don’t win the title.
