The Indianapolis Colts are soaring with a 5-1 start, fueled by the remarkable resurgence of quarterback Daniel Jones, who currently tops PFSN’s QB Impact metric. But amid the team’s hot streak, Colts fans were hit with worrying news on Wednesday as standout wide receiver Josh Downs appeared on the injury report.
So, what exactly happened to Downs, and will he be ready to suit up for Sunday’s crucial matchup? Let’s break it down.
Josh Downs Injury Details: What We Know So Far
Downs’ concussion came as a complete surprise. There were no prior signs of concern before his absences from practices on Wednesday and Thursday.
The veteran receiver had played all four quarters in the Colts’ win over the Cardinals, making his sudden appearance on the injury report both unexpected and alarming for Indianapolis fans.
While there were no immediate signs of distress during the game, two heavy hits late in the contest may have been the cause. Early in the fourth quarter, Cardinals safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson leveled Downs moments after his 5-yard touchdown grab.
Later, with just over five minutes remaining, Taylor-Demerson and two other defenders converged on Downs following a 9-yard catch that set up the game-winning score. The contact on the second hit was so intense that Taylor-Demerson himself left the field injured.
Despite those collisions, Downs stayed in the game and finished with six receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown, an effort that suggested any concussion symptoms likely emerged after the final whistle.
The Colts officially listed Downs as “did not practice” on the injury report, marking his entry into the NFL’s concussion protocol. This protocol requires players to pass through multiple stages before being cleared for game action, making his Week 7 availability against the Los Angeles Chargers uncertain.
Historically, players placed in concussion protocol rarely suit up the following week. Most miss at least one game, and those who do return immediately typically log limited practice reps early in the week. Downs’ complete absence on Wednesday is, therefore, not a positive sign for his short-term outlook.
If he’s able to return to practice on Friday, there remains an outside chance he could clear the necessary steps in time to play. But as it stands, all indications point toward the Colts preparing to be without one of Daniel Jones’ most reliable weapons for at least one game.
Downs has quickly become one of Jones’ trusted targets, hauling in 26 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown in six games to earn 27th place in PFSN’s WR Impact metric. His absence leaves a clear void in the slot, where none of the Colts’ other receivers, Alec Pierce, Ashton Dulin, or Adonai Mitchell, typically line up.
With Dulin also nursing an injury, Indianapolis may need to adjust its passing scheme and lean more on Michael Pittman Jr. and tight end Tyler Warren to keep the offense moving.
