UPDATE: Mason is back in the game and appears to be okay.
During the final minutes in the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings‘ Week 5 London game against the Cleveland Browns, running back Jordan Mason went down with a lower-body injury. Here’s the latest on his status.
What Happened to Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason?
Amidst the Vikings’ final drive of the third quarter, quarterback Carson Wentz got a short pass off after taking an eight-yard sack. However, while blocking for Wentz, Mason went down with an injury, taking some time to get off the field and forcing the broadcast to go to commercial.
Thankfully, when they returned, Mason was no longer on the field. Following another play, the announcers shared that he was able to get up and jog off the field under his own power. There’s been no official word on Mason’s status from the Vikings.

The fact that Zavier Scott came in for the first snap of the Vikings’ next drive could indicate that Mason’s injury is more severe than expected. This is upsetting, as Mason had been working his way back from a fumble on Minnesota’s first drive of the game. He found his way to the end zone on the first drive of the second half to give the Vikings a 14-10 lead.
Mason has been operating as the Vikings’ clear RB1 while Aaron Jones recovers from a hamstring strain. Heading into Week 5, he is the 7th-ranked running back in PFSN’s Running Back Impact score with a grade of 83.7. Jones is expected back when first eligible. If Mason remains out, Jones would again be thrust into a larger role than the team anticipated.
Jones is eligible to come back after the Week 6 bye, and any semblance of an injury could result in a cluttered committee. He’s an impressive back who has seen his skill set expand in an extended role, a progression that figures to have him competing for touches post-bye, assuming health.
Scott would likely start if Mason can’t go, with Cam Akers mixing in when needed. We could also see more from fullback C.J. Ham, primarily used in pass protection and for the occasional one-yard Dive.
Scott would immediately become a priority add off the waiver wire. He already has desperation RB4 fantasy value in light of his role as the passing-down back alongside Mason. Hopefully, Mason’s injury will not be too severe, and the back will return to the field soon.
