The Arizona Cardinals have spiraled toward the bottom of the NFL standings, prompting questions about Jonathan Gannon’s job security.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the 2025 season expecting measurable progress in their third year under coach Jonathan Gannon. Instead, they have spiraled toward the bottom of the NFL standings, prompting questions about Gannon’s job security as the team approaches the final stretch of the season.

What was once viewed as a stable coaching situation has rapidly become one of the league’s biggest question marks, with insiders suggesting the next month could determine whether Gannon remains in charge beyond 2025.

NFL Insider on Jonathan Gannon’s Future Within the Team

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler recently cast doubt on Gannon’s future, noting that Arizona’s path places the coach in increasingly uncertain territory.

Fowler said that while keeping Gannon would be a “sensible play” for owner Michael Bidwill, the franchise is now staring down what could be a disastrous finish. Entering Week 15 with a 3-10 record, the Cardinals have lost ten of their past eleven games.

“The team is miserably bad right now and finishes the season with the Texans, Falcons, Bengals and Rams,” Fowler said, via ESPN. “Gannon might need to win one, maybe two games to reach solid footing.”

The situation is complicated by the fact that Gannon’s tenure has produced mixed results. After overseeing a modest improvement last season, in which he led Arizona to four more wins than the previous season.

However, they did not reach the postseason. Hopes entering 2025 were built on defensive investments and optimism surrounding an offense expected to take a step forward. Instead, the Cardinals endured another playoff elimination.

Injuries have undeniably contributed to the team’s challenges, offering some internal hesitation about making a coaching change. Despite the losing streak, sources around the team maintain that Gannon has not lost the locker room.

Meanwhile, Gannon himself has been candid about the speculation. Asked in November about rumors surrounding his job status, when the Cardinals sat at 3-7, he said:

“[That’s] not a controllable for me. I didn’t hire myself. I’m not going to fire myself. … I know it comes up. That’s the business we’re in. If you don’t want to be in that business, we laugh, we joke [and say], ‘go work somewhere else.’ I’m going to control the controlables for myself. I come to work and do the best job that I can and try to get our team in position to win a game.”

For now, all signs point to the final four games as the defining chapter of Gannon’s third season. According to PFSN’s Impact metric, the offense ranks 20th among all teams, while the defense ranks 26th.
