John Harbaugh Reveals Major Difference Between Dexter Lawrence’s Trade Demand and Lamar Jackson’s

John Harbaugh leans on his past Lamar Jackson experience to downplay Dexter Lawrence's trade request from the New York Giants.

John Harbaugh navigated the treacherous waters of a franchise quarterback’s trade demand and lived to tell the tale. Now, in his first offseason as head coach of the New York Giants, he faces a remarkably similar standoff with Dexter Lawrence. The star defensive tackle skipped voluntary workouts this week after requesting a trade.

The 28-year-old defender wants a new deal reflecting his status among the NFL’s elite. Lawrence currently has two years remaining on the four-year, $90 million extension he signed in May 2023. Harbaugh downplayed any immediate panic, leaning on his extensive experience from his 18-year tenure with the Baltimore Ravens.

Head Coach John Harbaugh Could Use Lamar Jackson Experience To Navigate Dexter Lawrence Standoff

Handling a superstar’s public desire to leave is practically a rite of passage for veteran head coaches. Harbaugh famously weathered Lamar Jackson’s trade request in Baltimore before the quarterback eventually signed a massive extension.

The fundamental difference in New York boils down to established trust. Harbaugh spent years building equity with Jackson before their contract drama unfolded, whereas he is just beginning to establish a relationship with Lawrence.

“I think we knew this going in, the way it was approached was just with patience,” Harbaugh said.

“We knew the relationships were the relationships. We had great relationships. It’s a little different because I knew Lamar at that point. We had been working together for like 5, 6 years. Four years, five years, something like that. It’s not quite that way with Dex. I don’t know Dex as well.”

Harbaugh added, “I think it’s the same in the sense that it’s just understanding it’s part of the business of the job. It will get resolved. It’s going to work out. Dexter wants to play; we want him to play. How it’s all going to shake out, we don’t control that. We’re not given to know the future. The only thing we really can’t control is the outcome. What we can control is how we approach it along the way, with respect, professionally, absolutely.

“All these players in this league, all the coaches in this league, all the front office people in the league deserve to be highly respected. It’s high-level business, high-level football. I’m sure it will be handled in a real high level way like that. I’m not worried about it.”

Why Lawrence Is the Core of the Giants’ Defense

New York’s defense cannot afford to lose its most disruptive force in the trenches. The Giants finished the 2025 season with a porous run defense, surrendering a staggering 5.3 yards per carry. They ranked 23rd in PFSN’s NFL Defense Impact Metrics with a score of 69.7 last season.

Lawrence remains the linchpin of a defensive front that includes edge rushers Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Last season, Lawrence was the 38th DT in PFSN’s NFL DT Impact Rankings with a C+ grade and recorded 31 total tackles and 1 interception in 17 games.

General manager Joe Schoen has shown no inclination to sell low on his centerpiece. The interior market exploded over the last calendar year, leaving Lawrence’s $22.5 million average annual value sitting outside the top 10 at his position.

Harbaugh and the front office hold the leverage of time, as mandatory minicamp is still months away. The new coaching regime must now bridge the gap between business and football to keep their defensive anchor in the Meadowlands.
