49ers Insider Calls Joey Bosa ‘The Best Guy out There’ Amid SF’s Search for Difference Makers in Free Agency

Insider Matt Maiocco believes the 49ers could pursue Joey Bosa in free agency, potentially pairing him with brother Nick to strengthen the pass rush.

The San Francisco 49ers have had one of the best starts to the offseason among all 32 NFL teams, highlighted by the arrivals of Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa and the return of Dre Greenlaw to the roster. The moves show that the front office reacted to the impact of the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory and wants to regain the spotlight.

With more than $45 million in available cap space, many insiders believe the team is still not satisfied with its additions and have even pointed to Joey Bosa, the brother of Nick Bosa, as a potential target in this second phase of free agency.

Joey Bosa Could Still Join the 49ers This Offseason

Pairing the Bosa brothers has long been a dream for San Francisco fans, and it appears to be the most likely destination for the veteran pass rusher who left the Buffalo Bills during this free agency window. Now free to sign with any franchise, imagining him with the 49ers is easy, especially considering the team showed interest in 2025.

Insider Matt Maiocco, who covers the 49ers, said he believes a move for Joey “makes sense” to pair him with Nick and turn the Bosa brothers in San Francisco into a reality that fits within the team’s budget while also addressing a roster need, the pass rush.

“I think where the 49ers are, it certainly would not surprise me if they’re able to put together a competitive offer to bring in Joey Bosa,” Maiocco said. “… I think Joey Bosa is the best guy out there, and what the market is for him remains to be seen. Certainly, teams are interested.”

Joey has dealt with injuries throughout his career, which have overshadowed the prominence he had during his early years with the Los Angeles Chargers. The talent is still there, and with his role now leaning more toward a rotational edge rusher, the 49ers could be the perfect destination since Nick is the starter and Mykel Williams is expected to have a major role.

In 2025 with Buffalo, Joey finished the year with just 5.0 sacks and received a C+ grade in the PFSN’s NFL EDGE Impact Metrics, ranking 38th among all edge rushers. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ pass rush was one of the worst in the NFL, which hurt the team’s chances of going deep in the season, as they were eliminated in the Divisional Round by rival Seattle.

The strategy for the season appears to be betting on proven players whose performance is predictable and taking advantage of a small window in which most of the team’s stars are still at an age where they can produce at a high level. Adding Bosa would please fans because of the narrative and would also help on the field in an area of need.
