On Thursday Night Football, the Houston Texans improved their record to 6-5 after beating the Buffalo Bills by a score of 23-19.
Despite the win, one of the biggest storylines this season for the Texans is Joe Mixon’s injury status. Little is known about whether he will play again this year as the season heads into its final games. Here is an update on Mixon’s injury status.
Will Joe Mixon Play Again this Season?
Mixon’s status has become one of the most significant question marks surrounding the Texans this year. He hasn’t appeared in a game this season after suffering an injury in the offseason, and updates on his health have been scarce.
However, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport posted that Mixon was not expected to play again this season as he recovers from a foot injury that he suffered in the offseason. Ultimately, the team would move forward with Nick Chubb and Woody Marks in the back field. It makes sense that he could be out for the season due to the lack of updates from the team, which could indicate that there is no notable progress.
Mixon responded to this post himself, essentially refuting the claims. He questioned how anyone could know more about his recovery than himself, calling out Rapoport for reporting the news.
Thus, there’s a contradiction between Rapoport’s reporting and Mixon’s statement.
Despite Mixon’s comments, the Texans have still not offered any insight into the injury, leaving fans and reporters alike in the dark. Until the Texans issue a statement, we’ll have no definitive answer on his availability for the rest of the season.
In the wake of the injury, the team has relied on Nick Chubb and Woody Marks to lead the backfield.
This is Chubb’s first season with the Texans after signing with them in the offseason. Before this, he spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Cleveland Browns.
This season, he’s rushed 105 times for 435 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he’s caught 12 passes for 58 yards. This season in PFSN’s Running Back Impact metrics, Chubb ranks 39th with an impact score of 68.1 and a letter grade of D+.
The team drafted Marks in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 116th overall pick.
In 11 games, he’s rushed 115 times for 422 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he’s caught 17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. According to PFSN’s Running Back Impact metrics, Marks ranks 42nd with an impact score of 66.2 and a letter grade of D.
Despite Mixon’s injury, the team has managed with Chubb and Marks, which raises questions about his future with the team. The final year of his deal is 2026, so the team may move Mixon in the offseason and rely on Marks next season.
