‘J.J. McCarthy Will Be Out of the League in 5 Years’ — NFL Fans Mock Vikings QB After Wild Interception vs. Bears

After two brutal interceptions vs. the Bears, Vikings fans erupted with criticism of J.J. McCarthy, questioning his NFL future, and the team’s QB strategy.

Minnesota Vikings franchise hopeful J.J. McCarthy has struggled to meet expectations in his first season as a starter. The quarterback has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns this season, and after he threw two in a single quarter against the Chicago Bears in Week 11, frustrated fans have reached a breaking point.

J.J. McCarthy’s Interception Sparks Outrage Among Vikings Fans

The Vikings entered the Week 11 matchup with a 4-5 record, and while it isn’t too far behind the first place in the NFC North, the quarterback play has been inconsistent. McCarthy, making just his fifth career start after early-season injuries, went 2–2 in his first four starts and has struggled to find rhythm.

Late in the second quarter, while trailing the Bears, McCarthy attempted a deep pass on first down. The throw was intended for a Vikings receiver, but safety Kevin Byard was already tracking the route, and the ball landed cleanly in his hands.

Chicago capitalized with a field goal, and when Minnesota got the ball back, McCarthy threw yet another interception, this time on a deep end-zone shot to Justin Jefferson.

Fan frustration boiled over quickly. One wrote, “Yea JJ will be out the league in 5 years.”

Another asked, “How long till the JJ McCarthy experience is over?”

Many were stunned that McCarthy never saw Byard running directly into the passing lane despite the receiver already being tightly covered.

“The ball was so perfectly thrown to the defender I thought that was the WR. LMAO,” one user joked.

Another added, “WHAT A THROW BY NINE TO THE WIDE OPEN DEFENDER.”

McCarthy has completed just 53.7% of his passes through four games this season, and it’s the lowest among the QBs with four or more starts. As of writing, he had completed just 10 of his 24 pass attempts, showing no signs of improvement and fueling memes about himself.

“This is embarrassing! McCarthy can’t find anybody… Either the Vikings get a high quality veteran QB to mentor McCarthy for a few years or get a new head coach who’ll stop this ridiculous hemorrhaging,” one fan wrote.

Another was even more blunt: “JJ McCarthy ain’t it folks. Hate to say it, but he’s a disaster.”

The Vikings selected McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 draft, but he suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason, leading Sam Darnold to take over and deliver a 14–3 campaign. Minnesota released Darnold in the offseason, and with him now thriving with the Seattle Seahawks while McCarthy struggles, fans have also turned their frustration toward the front office.

“I bet KOC wishes he had JJ McCarthy at QB today instead of ‘Nine,'” one fan quipped. Another added, “I’m sick of hearing how good of a QB coach Kevin O’Connell is. You let Sam Darnold go and you can’t whisper to JJ McCarthy.”

Despite the criticism, some analysts, and Vikings legend Randy Moss among them, have urged patience, noting McCarthy’s athletic upside, arm talent, and long-term potential. But with the redshirt rookie currently ranked 35th in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric and showing no major improvement through five games, his leash is shrinking. If the turnovers continue at this pace, a midseason benching may become inevitable.
