Moving on from Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets were hoping to turn the page on the franchise’s cursed history with Aaron Glenn as the new head coach. However, the way the 2025 NFL season has unfolded has made it clear that the rebuilding project will take some time.
Dishing out a two-year, $40 million contract to Justin Fields, the first season of the new quarterback-head coach pairing has gone disastrously. With a 2-7 record, they are near the bottom of the league and have traded away two key pieces of their defense. But for one analyst, their fortune is about to flip come the 2026 NFL Draft.
Jets Finally Figure Out the Quarterback Position
Despite trying to find a quarterback for the better part of two decades, New York hasn’t been successful in its pursuit. Under a new head coach focused on building a culture, they hoped to find their guy in Fields.
However, the former first-round pick hasn’t panned out for the organization this year. Ranking 29th on PFSN’s QB Impact, his numbers have been downright atrocious, as the Jets continue to loiter near the bottom of the league.
As it has become clear that the road to redemption will have an extended timeline, the team decided to part ways with superstar corner Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to build draft equity.
Now, with Fields looking like a very unlikely option to continue under center, Jacob Infante has a name in mind for them in his latest mock draft for 2026. With the third overall pick, they select Ty Simpson out of Alabama to be their long-term solution.
After remaining in the backup role for the first three years, Simpson has accumulated over 3,000 total scrimmage yards and 26 touchdowns to his credit. However, the 2025 season accounts for 2,461 passing yards and 21 touchdowns of those totals.
“One of the breakout stars of this college football season, Ty Simpson, looks much more advanced than your average one-year starting quarterback. He’s a precise, accurate passer who sees the field well and displays good toughness in the pocket. He’s a high-floor QB, which the Jets would find more stable.”
Infante has clearly taken a liking to him. And for a Jets team that needs stability more than anything else, taking a reliable passing threat could be the perfect way to kickstart a new era under Glenn fully.
