The Buckeyes were favored against the Hurricanes in the Cotton Bowl this year, but the defending National Champions were shockingly eliminated in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoffs.
Wilson shared his reaction to the result on the following morning and referenced what he believes is one of their biggest issues. He suggested a solution to increase their success as we advance.

Jayden Fielding missed a crucial field goal attempt, his only one of the contest, at the end of the first half of the game. His issues as their starting kicker have been well documented as he has missed four times this season, including another important one in their Big Ten Championship loss to the Indiana Hoosiers.
A CFB Insider covering Ohio State recently shared some alarming stats on Fielding kicking in big moments for the Buckeyes. He pointed out that he only made one of three field goal attempts across his two Cotton Bowl appearances and converted on less than 60% of his field goal attempts in dome stadiums. It’s also important to note that he missed his only field goal attempt in a CFP game last year against the Tennessee Volunteers.

All of this likely played a role in Wilson’s frustrations, which were expressed on New Year’s Day, the morning after his former collegiate team was eliminated from Championship contention.
It is also likely that it contributed to his seemingly obvious suggestion that they need to find a better and more reliable kicker in the future to help avoid similar failures.
It has also been a frustrating year for Wilson in the 2025 NFL season as he has been limited to just seven games due to injuries. He shockingly still tops all Jets wide receivers in PFSN’s Impact Rankings for this year, demonstrating just how poorly New York’s offense has performed as they continue to seek a new starting quarterback.
