The Washington Commanders face͏ yet another critical test this week,͏ but͏ their young quarterback’s health has become the team’s primary concern.
After exiting ͏Sunday’s matchup with a ͏leg ͏injury,͏ uncertainty now surrounds͏ Jayden Daniels’͏ availability for ͏the͏ upcoming primetime clash. ͏The latest reports offer some clarity, ͏though ͏not all ͏of it͏ is reassuring.
How Serious Is Jayden Daniels’ Injury Situation?
Daniels was forced to leave early in the third quarter of Sunday’s game after appearing to tweak his right leg.
As reported by PFSN’s Ernesto Cova, the second-year signal-caller exited the game in the third quarter after what appeared to be a hamstring injury. ESPN insider John Keim reported that Daniels underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the damage, putting his status for Monday’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs in question.
Initial evaluations from medical experts painted a cautiously optimistic picture. Sports medicine specialist ͏Dr. Jesse Morse analyzed video ͏of ͏the incident and shared his insights on social media.
“Jayden Daniels. Right hamstring vs. knee injury. His hamstring was stretched in an abnormal position… ACL unlikely but possible,” he wrote. Morse added that Daniels’ right leg seemed to take the brunt of the stress on the play and concluded, “My guess is a grade 1 hamstring strain, out 2–4 weeks.”
That assessment aligned closely with the official update provided later. On Tuesday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported on X that Daniels sustained a low-grade hamstring strain during Sunday’s game and will not play in next week’s Monday night game against the Chiefs. The report also noted that Marcus Mariota will start in his place.
On Thursday, the Commanders officially announced that Daniels will not play in Week 8, and Mariota will get another start.
The injury is the latest͏ in a string of physical setbacks ͏for͏ Dan͏iels. As Cova noted, Daniels ͏has previously been sidelined twice this season because ͏of a sprained left knee and also dealt with a rib injury during his ͏rookie year. These recurring issues have raised legitimate concerns ͏about his durability, particularly͏ given his͏ lean build and mobile playing style.
Before his latest setback, Daniels’ performance reflected both potential and growing consistency. According to PFSN’s QB Impact metrics, he has an Impact Score of 74.3 and received a grade of C.
He currently ranks͏ 23rd in the season and͏ 478th overall since 2000, starting in five games. In those appearances, he completed 89 of 146 passes, achieving a 61.0% completion rate. The numbers are consistent with his reported ͏passing stats of 1,031 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception.
The Commanders have clearly felt his absence when he’s not under center. Now sitting at 3–4, they continue to search for rhythm in his absence. For a team that reached the NFC title game a year ago, keeping Daniels healthy remains critical to any hopes of returning to playoff contention.
The ͏Commanders and Chiefs ͏will meet on Monday Night Football at 8:15 p.m.͏ ET on ͏October 27, but Daniels will have ͏to watch from͏ the sidelines ͏as he continues his ͏recovery.
