New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart was having an impressive game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium. Dart was running and throwing for touchdowns as the Giants led 27-17 in the third quarter.
But a massive hit on Dart sent him to the sidelines.
What Happened to Jaxson Dart?
Dart was caught in the crossfire of Eagles defenders as he was under a heavy rush. As he moved up from the pocket, Dart was tackled hard and went down on the MetLife turf. Giants medical personnel came out and immediately checked on him.
After medical personnel checked on him, Dart got off the field and headed for the blue tent. Russell Wilson, who is Dart’s backup, came on the field for one play.

Minutes after this happened, according to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, “Jaxson Dart out of the medical tent and headed back to the sideline.” Dart was out on the field for the Giants’ first series of the fourth quarter, which ended in a three-and-out.
As of the fourth quarter, Dart is 16-of-24 passing for 187 yards and one touchdown pass. He’s also rushed for a touchdown and has 51 yards rushing.
He ran for 50+ yards in Weeks 4 and 5, joining Patrick Mahomes as the only QBs with 50+ rushing yards in consecutive games through the first five weeks this season.
This was Dart’s true coming-out performance; the game in which he said, “I’m here now.” The rookie was playing awesome, well on his way to a QB1 finish. His mobility keeps his weekly floor high, but his inexperience also shows.
Dart will learn that the extra yards aren’t worth the punishment he will take from NFL linebackers. He will also learn to keep his eyes downfield more. Once he decides to take off, that’s it. He just tucks it and runs, rather than still looking for a play or a way to get rid of the ball. The rushing is great for fantasy, but not for his health.
Should Dart have to go out of the game again, the Giants’ offense will be forced to go back to Wilson. There’s a reason Wilson isn’t starting anymore. It’s not because he was effective at delivering the ball to his receivers. This would be a downgrade for the entire Giants offense, which really only has two startable players beyond Dart in Cam Skattebo and Wan’Dale Robinson.
The rookie Dart was having an impressive game, likely the best of his young career. The first-rounder had an average PFSN QB Impact Grade of 73.1 across his first two starts. For comparison, Wilson’s average was 72.4, even with his excellent Week 2 game at Dallas.
Dart’s greatest strength also left him prone to injury. As of his injury, Dart ranked fourth among quarterbacks in scramble EPA, trailing only Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Patrick Mahomes. Despite not playing meaningful snaps the first three weeks, he already has the eighth-most scrambles this season.
