Will Jauan Jennings Get Suspended for Punching Panthers Player? A Look at 49ers WR’s Potential Punishment

Read about the heated confrontation that took place after the 49ers-Panthers MNF game and whether WR Jauan Jennings is up for suspension.

Temperatures boiled during the San Francisco 49ers’ 20-9 primetime win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night. While players shook hands after the game, things escalated between Niners wide receiver Jauan Jennings and Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig.

Will 49ers WR Jauan Jennings Face Any Consequences For His Actions After the MNF Game?

After the game ended, Jennings walked up to Moehrig and violently shoved him in the face. However, no brawl ensued as Moehrig’s teammate, Krys Barnes, forced Jennings away.

Jennings’s shot was reportedly in retaliation for a low blow from Moehrig during the game, which the Panthers safety defended by referencing the San Francisco wideout’s physical play and trash talk.

Jennings said, “I was just responding to some childish behavior (the low blow).”

The NFL has yet to discipline the players in any way; however, past incidents of a similar nature have set the precedent for such fallouts.

Jennings could be facing a fine and a suspension based on how the league has dealt with players in the past. In 2020, Javon Wims punched a New Orleans Saints defensive back out of retaliation during a game and was suspended for two games. In 2022, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans shoved a defender out of retaliation after the whistle, earning a one-game suspension.

Moehrig, on the other hand, might be looking at nothing more than a fine due to the nature of his hit being a non-football act that occurred during a play. In 2015, Odell Beckham Jr. was only fined for a low blow on Josh Norman. So, while both players might’ve avoided significant consequences, the league could likely make an example out of them.

Jennings’s Shot Came After a Steady Win for the 49ers

Moehrig’s low blow stemmed from frustration that aligned with what Carolina had to endure on Monday night. Although their defense kept San Francisco at a reasonable tally, their offense, sitting at 21st in the PFSN’s Offensive Impact, struggled to deliver on its end.

The Niners took a 10-3 lead into halftime, thanks to Jennings’s safe hands and Matt Gay’s boot.

While the Panthers improved in the second half, San Francisco’s consistency steered it to victory. Carolina quarterback Bryce Young finally found the end zone with a deep pass down the middle to Tetairoa McMillan for a 29-yard touchdown.

But the visitors’ drowning efforts weren’t enough, as Brock Purdy drove the home team into field goal range to secure the 20-9 win.
