Buccaneers GM Jason Licht Admits Mike Evans Rejected Larger Contract to Join 49ers

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht explained why he holds no resentment toward Mike Evans for accepting a cheaper contract with San Francisco.

Usually in the NFL, money decides everything. Phrases like “follow the money” or “money talks” tend to shape where players land. Mike Evans did the contrary. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht confirmed Tampa Bay offered more than San Francisco and added context to Evans’ decision to leave the only team he had ever played for.

Why Mike Evans Chose the 49ers Over a Bigger Offer From the Buccaneers

Licht addressed Evans’ exit and pointed to the relationship built over his time in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers stayed engaged throughout the process and believed they had positioned themselves to retain their longtime top receiver.

“I don’t feel betrayed. He earned the right to make the decision,” Licht said via Bucs reporter Rick Stroud. “He loves this team. He loves everything about it. I think he wanted a new challenge. I feel like we did everything we could. I had a lot of talks with Mike about that.”

That effort included an offer that exceeded what Evans accepted from San Francisco. Tampa Bay also presented a long-term path that would have kept him with the franchise and allowed him to finish his career in the same place he started.

“We had a verbal agreement that he could be here as long as he wants,” Licht added. “I’m happy for Mike and happy he found a place he wants to be.”

The contract Evans signed with the 49ers adds important context to the decision. The deal is valued at $42.5 million with $14.3 million guaranteed. That number sits below top wide receiver contracts across the league and closer to mid-tier value at the position.

Evans appeared in 8 games last season and ranked No. 65 in PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact Metric. He recorded 1,000 receiving yards in every season of his career before last year.

San Francisco did not stop with Evans. The team also added Christian Kirk on a one-year, $6 million deal to build depth at the position. Kirk struggled last season but ranked No. 32 in the WR Impact Metric in both 2022 and 2023 and provides another experienced option in the passing game.

The additions signal a clear effort to stabilize the wide receiver room for quarterback Brock Purdy. Injuries and roster turnover impacted the group last season, and the front office responded by bringing in proven production.

Tampa Bay offered more money and pushed to keep its all-time leading receiver. Evans chose San Francisco and turned down the larger offer in favor of a different situation.
