Following the Jaguars’ 27–24 loss to the Bills on Wild Card Weekend, Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen spoke with NFL analyst Peter Schrager. During the conversation, Coen reflected on his time coaching Baker Mayfield, offering high praise for the veteran quarterback.
What Did Liam Coen Say About His Time Coaching Baker Mayfield?
On Friday afternoon, mere days after the Jaguars’ playoff loss, Coen joined Schrager on his show, “The Schrager Hour.”
In the interview, Schrager asked Coen to tell listeners a story about Mayfield. Coen, having coached Mayfield in Los Angeles and, more notably, Tampa Bay, was more than appreciative for the time he spent with the Pro Bowl QB.
Coen began by saying, “Baker is a dawg. That word gets tossed around a bunch in our profession, but he’s a real one. When you talk about a G, he’s a G…”
He then noted how much of a competitor Mayfield is, while also praising him as a great person, particularly as a husband and father. Coen closed by adding, “Baker is extremely hardworking… and I love him.”
I asked Liam Coen to give me a story on Baker Mayfield, a guy he’s coached in two places (LA and Tampa Bay), for the pod.
Pure appreciation.

If one coach were to attest to Mayfield’s abilities on and off the field, it would be Coen. As previously mentioned, Coen mentored Mayfield with the Rams in 2022 and with the Buccaneers in 2024.
In Mayfield’s stint with the Rams, he only appeared in five games. However, Mayfield undoubtedly made his presence felt. During his first start with the Rams, on Thursday Night primetime, Mayfield led one of the most improbable game-winning drives, with Coen guiding him on the sidelines.
That offseason, Mayfield signed with the Buccaneers, and Coen left to coach at the University of Kentucky. Additionally, Mayfield earned himself a fresh start, which proved significant when he reconciled with Coen in Tampa Bay in 2024.
Coen took the Buccaneers coordinator job and quickly became known as one of the top offensive gurus in the NFL. In that season, Coen truly unlocked Mayfield’s talent, while also helping Tampa Bay to PFSN’s third-ranked offensive unit.
Although it was only one season, Coen proved his worth as an offensive play-caller before eventually taking the Jaguars’ head coaching gig. Now, in Jacksonville, Coen has had a similar effect on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence ranked 30th among quarterbacks in 2024 and jumped up to 16th in 2025, per PFSN.
The Jaguars also posted a 13-4 record and claimed the AFC South title. Despite falling to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in round one, Coen showed that both he and the Jaguars have a very bright future.
