Revisiting Jacksonville’s Most Recent Postseason Victory

The Jaguars’ most recent playoff win came during the 2022 postseason, a night that instantly became one of the wildest comebacks in NFL playoff history. Hosting the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card round at EverBank Stadium, Jacksonville looked dead early. Very dead.

The Chargers raced out to a 27–0 first-half lead, forcing Jacksonville into desperation mode before halftime. What followed was a complete reversal. Trevor Lawrence steadied himself after a nightmare start. The offense found rhythm. The defense tightened. And by the end of the night, the Jaguars had authored a 31–30 comeback victory, the third-largest playoff comeback in league history.

That win marked Jacksonville’s first playoff victory since the 2017 season and officially announced the franchise’s return to relevance. It also reinforced a familiar trend. The Jaguars remain undefeated in Wild Card games at home, a perfect record that continues to shape postseason narratives in North Florida.

Before that, the defining playoff run of modern Jaguars history came in 2017. That January, Jacksonville defeated the Buffalo Bills 10–3 at home in a defensive slugfest. It was the franchise’s first home playoff game of the 21st century. The win ignited a memorable run that included a stunning 45–42 road victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Divisional Round.

That 2017 season ended painfully in the AFC Championship Game at New England. Jacksonville held a double-digit fourth-quarter lead before watching it disappear. ESPN’s win probability model later showed the Jaguars with a 93.2% chance to win late in the game. Two Patriots touchdown drives flipped history. Jacksonville has not been closer to the Super Bowl.

Earlier, there have been similar shocks. In 1996, just their second season, the Jaguars stunned Jim Kelly’s Bills and John Elway’s Broncos on the road. In 1999, a franchise-best 14–2 season featured a legendary 62–7 demolition of Dan Marino’s Dolphins before another heartbreaking loss ended the run.

Jaguars-Bills Wild Card Preview

Once again, Buffalo returns to Jacksonville with postseason stakes attached. The Bills are searching for something they have yet to achieve under their current leadership: a playoff road victory. Jacksonville, meanwhile, draws confidence from history, especially at EverBank Stadium.

The Jaguars have consistently protected home turf in Wild Card games. Buffalo carries scars from past trips to Jacksonville. The matchup brings together two teams with unfinished postseason business and very different histories in this setting.

The Jaguars are ranked 13th in offense with a 76.6 score and a C grade in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric. In comparison, the Bills are ranked third with an 86.5 and a B grade.

As kickoff approaches, Jacksonville’s recent past matters. The Jaguars know what winning in January looks like at home. They have done it before, most recently in dramatic fashion. The question now is whether they can summon it again.
