Is Josh Allen Hurt? Explaining Why the Bills Superstar Took 1 Snap and Then Exited Week 18 vs. Jets

Bills QB Josh Allen was only on the field for one snap on Sunday against the New York Jets. Here's the reason why he exited the game.

Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Josh Allen took the field at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., for just one play against the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Allen, obviously under Bills head coach Sean McDermott’s direction, headed off the field and was replaced immediately by backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

What’s Happening With Bills QB Josh Allen?

Entering Sunday’s game, Allen had been dealing with injury issues, which have hampered him for some time, and McDermott probably didn’t want the star quarterback to aggravate them in a game that really didn’t have meaning for the Bills.

Buffalo entered Sunday’s game with an 11-5 record, 6-2 on its home turf. Allen will now watch from the sidelines on Sunday while getting prepared for the Bills’ next game in the NFL playoffs.

Trubisky came into the game firing on all cylinders. At least, that’s how it looked in the first quarter. The backup quarterback hit Dawson Knox for a 17-yard touchdown pass to put the Bills up early, 7-0.

According to the PFSN NFL QB Impact Metric, entering Sunday’s game against the Jets, Allen had an impact score of 89.6 and graded out to a B+.

For the season, Allen has 3,668 passing yards, 25 touchdown passes, and 10 interceptions, while completing 69.3% of his throws. He’s averaged 229.3 yards passing per game this season, running the Bills’ offense.

But Allen also has a knack for being a dual-threat quarterback with his legs. So far this season, he has 112 rushing attempts for 579 yards rushing and 14 rushing touchdowns.

Allen was a first-round draft pick by the Bills in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Wyoming. In his career, all spent with Buffalo, Allen has thrown for 30,102 yards, 220 touchdown passes, and just 94 interceptions. The Bills’ star is a true gamer, always willing to put his body on the line when his team is near the end zone.

But those injury problems have been tough for Allen to overcome at times. Taking him out of a meaningless game on the final regular-season Sunday in the 2025 NFL season is probably a good call by McDermott and the Bills’ coaching staff.

If the Bills win today, they will finish the season as the sixth seed in the AFC. If the current bracket holds, they will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round.
