Is Courtland Sutton Injured? Breaking Down if the Broncos WR Is Hurt After Slow Start in Week 8 vs. Cowboys

Let's take a look at Courtland Sutton's slow start in Week 8 as the Denver Broncos wideout struggles to get going against the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite missing a game this season, WR Courtland Sutton has remained one of the best weapons on the Denver Broncos roster. The eighth-year receiver has continued to develop his chemistry with second-year quarterback Bo Nix as the Broncos have gotten out to a 5-2 start in the 2025 NFL season.

Despite leading the team in receiving, Sutton has gotten off to a slow start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8. Here’s a look at his day so far.

What Happened to Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton?

Sutton, a former SMU Mustang, has spent his entire career with the Broncos after Denver drafted him with the 40th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s struggled with consistency over that time, only breaking the 1,000-yard mark twice. However, the second came last season when he seemed to click with then-rookie Nix.

Now through seven games, Sutton has hauled in 33 passes for 469 yards and three touchdowns. However, against a porous Dallas defense, he has looked like the WR3 behind second-year wideout Troy Franklin and rookie third-round pick Pat Bryant. Sutton has been targeted twice through two quarters, catching one pass for 11 yards.

Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. posted on X, “The Cowboys are making Pat Bryant and Troy Franklin look like All-Pros. We haven’t even heard from Courtland Sutton.” Franklin has caught five targets for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Bryant has snagged two for 40 yards and the first touchdown of his NFL career.

Interestingly, the rookies excel while the veteran struggles. According to PFSN’s Defensive Impact (DEFi), the Cowboys’ defense is ranked 30th in the league with a rating of 60.8. The passing defense has struggled in particular with the Cowboys giving up 1,822 yards through seven weeks along with 16 touchdowns, the third-most in the NFL.

While the Denver offense has found plenty of room against the Cowboys, will Sutton be able to turn it on in the second half after such a quiet start? The Broncos may not need him to, but given how productive his start to the season has been, it would be nice to see Sutton keep the pace to have yet another solid year after an impressive 2024 campaign.

Given how the young guys have found space to start the game, it would not be surprising to see Sutton find some windows in the second half.
