Is Christian McCaffrey Injured? A Look at the 49ers Superstar’s Injury Status After Slow Start vs. Eagles in NFL Playoffs

Christian McCaffrey is off to a slow start in the Wild Card round against the Philadelphia Eagles. Here's the latest update on the 49ers RB's status.

The San Francisco 49ers received terrible news on their star tight end, George Kittle, in the first half as he suffered an Achilles injury that will keep him out of today’s game and many more months. It’s time for Christian McCaffrey to be the player that everyone knows he can be in the absence of Kittle. However, he is off to a slow start and will need to be better in the second half.

Christian McCaffrey’s Slow Start

McCaffrey has a history of struggling with injuries, but he’s one of the few 49ers to stay healthy all season. That remains the case today, but he’s not been as effective. The Eagles have held him to 13 yards on eight carries and three catches for 22 yards.

The 49ers need to get McCaffrey to dominate. Trailing by three at the half, it’s now or never as he’s their best offensive weapon and needs to prove it. McCaffrey tallied over 2,000 scrimmage yards this season and was the steady hand in a revolving door of offensive weapons.

The San Francisco offense ranks 6th in the league according to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric with an impact score of 85.2. Whether it’s been Mac Jones or Brock Purdy at quarterback, McCaffrey has been the elite Offensive Player of the Year caliber player everyone expects him to be. It’s takeover time for the star running back as the 49ers stay within striking distance to punish the Eagles.

McCaffrey is the focus of the Eagles’ defense. They’ve been zeroed in on him on every snap because he is their most dangerous threat. With Kittle out, it’ll be even more of a priority to keep McCaffrey in check. He isn’t a stranger to being game planned against, and he often makes teams pay regardless of the attention they pay to him.

The 49ers started to feed him in the second quarter with two carries for 12 yards. He looked to get a rhythm going before Purdy threw a brutal interception to cut the drive short. San Francisco cannot afford to give the Eagles offense short fields. The Philadelphia offense is a shadow of its previous self, and giving them opportunities to score easily will likely seal San Fran’s fate and end their playoff run before it even gets started.

If San Francisco does manage to win this game, they’ll have to travel to Seattle for a rematch against the Seahawks. It’s an uphill battle for the 49ers, and it just got harder. Only time will tell if McCaffrey and his team can put it together in the second half.
