What’s Happening With Commanders RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.?

As the Commanders were trailing 14-10 in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia, backup quarterback Josh Johnson was in for an injured Marcus Mariota.

Mariota was checked in the blue tent along the Commanders’ sidelines for a right-hand injury and then was also checked for a concussion. Johnson remained in the game in the third quarter, and threw an interception that led to another Eagles touchdown, this one scored by star Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley.

The Eagles took a 21-10 lead after the Barkley touchdown. Johnson came back out on the field, and Mariota, who did return to the Washington sidelines after going to the locker room, was shown by Fox Sports cameras with his jacket over him.

As for Rodriguez, he’s not showing any signs of being injured or benched at the moment. As of the fourth quarter, Rodriguez had 10 carries for 28 yards. His longest for the game was a 7-yarder.

The Commanders will hope that Rodriguez can make a big impact in the final quarter of the game, or else Jacory Croskey-Merritt will be required to carry the load.

According to the PFSN NFL RB Impact metrics, Rodriguez has an impact score of 73.1 and grades out to a C. For the season entering Saturday night’s game at Northwest Stadium, Rodriguez had 81 carries for 372 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Speaking of Croskey-Merritt, as the game went deeper in the fourth quarter, he had eight carries for 25 yards. His longest run against the Eagles was a 13-yarder.

The Commanders were trying to keep Philadelphia from clinching the NFC East Division title on their home turf. But the Eagles appeared to be taking control of the ballgame as it wore on. It didn’t help much for Washington that their starting quarterback was on the sidelines just looking out toward the field.

Rodriguez still has time, though, to possibly make a difference in the ballgame.
