Over the last year and a half, the Buffalo Bills have made a dramatic alteration to their offensive approach. Rather than focus on the raw arm talent of Josh Allen, they have chosen a more conservative approach to their play style, leading to a heavier emphasis on the run game.
No player on the roster has flourished in the new system quite like James Cook. A dynamic, dual-threat running back, he had one of the best years for any rusher last season. However, the Bills remain steadfast in their denial of giving him a massive new contract. As a result, the two sides continue to remain at odds with each other.
Will James Cook Return to the Bills?
After being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Cook came out of the gates slow, primarily featuring in a role off the bench in his rookie year, as he tallied 507 yards and two touchdowns. However, from Year 2 onwards, he took over.
In 2023, he finished with 1,122 yards on the ground and added 445 yards through the air, with six total touchdowns to his name, earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. With his red-zone numbers under scrutiny, Cook responded in a big way in 2024.
Finishing as the co-leader of Bill’s rushing touchdowns with 16, he once again crossed the 1,000-yard mark as a rusher, while adding 258 yards through the air. He was sensational throughout their playoff run as well, adding 272 yards and three touchdowns in as many games.
Even with his spectacular performance spearheading Buffalo to finish as the fourth-best offense on PFSN’s Offense+ metric, the two sides haven’t been able to agree on a new contract. With training camp set to begin in the last week of July, it’s high time that the Bills figured out a solution.
And, a person familiar with the situation believes the two sides should agree by the time training camp rolls around and veterans report on July 22, as reported by USA Today.
What Are Cook’s Demands?
When the idea of an extension was first floating around, Cook made it clear that he wanted somewhere around $15 million. But with Saquon Barkley signing the first contract that gives a running back over $20 million annually, his numbers might have changed.
On his current deal, he is slated to make $5.2 million, which would be substantially less than the 2025 first-round pick, Ashton Jeanty. As a result, Cook might be looking for an even bigger number now.
“Everything is business. Ain’t no hard feelings. I don’t ever have beef with nobody.”

A presence during mandatory minicamps over the summer, Cook has made it clear that he wants to remain a member of the Buffalo squad. Now, it’s going to be about putting pen to paper. And as he said at the time, “Everything’s gonna work how it’s supposed to work.”
