Insider Reveals Vikings Will ‘Do Everything They Possibly Can’ to Pull Off Blockbuster Trade for $275M QB

A Vikings insider outlined what Minnesota might try if Joe Burrow ever became available, and why a trade would be complicated by his $275M deal.

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation has quickly become one of the NFL’s most scrutinized storylines heading into the 2026 offseason. With J.J. McCarthy enduring a rocky first year as a starter and the franchise now moving on from general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, speculation has turned toward whether Minnesota would pursue an elite veteran if the opportunity ever arose.

Vikings Target Bengals QB Following J.J. McCarthy’s Early Struggles

McCarthy’s rookie season in Minnesota featured flashes, but also clear growing pains, and the Vikings finished just outside serious playoff contention in a competitive NFC North. That context has fueled outside speculation that the team could look beyond a developmental timeline and pursue an immediate upgrade under center if a true top-tier passer ever hits the market.

On his show, Vikings insider Alec Lewis was asked directly about the idea of Burrow becoming available and how aggressive Minnesota would be in that scenario. He stressed that predicting odds would be speculative, but made clear that he expects the front office to be all-in if that door ever opened.

“Putting a percentage on it would be foolish on my part,” Lewis said. “If a player like Joe Burrow is available via trade, I expect the Vikings to do everything they possibly can to try to make that happen. It’s more of a question of what’s available, and how far from a cost perspective is it gonna take to get to the place at which it does become available.”

Separately, a video from Grant Cohn outlined a specific theoretical framework for what such a swing might look like from Minnesota’s perspective. “[The Vikings] want to get right back into contention,” Cohn said in the video.

“They’re planning to offer J.J. McCarthy and Jonathan Greenard, and two first‑round picks to the Cincinnati Bengals for Joe Burrow. If the Bengals say no, then they might go out and get Kirk Cousins, bring him back.”

That proposal has not been reported as an active negotiation; it is a suggested package illustrating the kind of capital it might take for any team to even start a conversation about a player in Burrow’s tier.

The common thread in both discussions is Minnesota’s willingness, at least in theory, to be aggressive if an elite quarterback shakes loose. What remains entirely unknown is whether Cincinnati would entertain offers at all.

Could Joe Burrow Leave The Bengals in 2026?

From the Bengals’ perspective, any Burrow trade would conflict with significant contractual and competitive realities. The quarterback signed a long-term extension with Cincinnati in 2023 that runs through 2029 and is reported to be worth $275 million in total value.

The deal includes very large guarantees and places him among the highest-paid players in the league on an average annual basis. Public contract databases show that Burrow’s cap hits rise into the high 40‑million and low 50‑million dollar range across the middle years of the agreement, and that the overall structure includes a full no‑trade clause for the core seasons.

That combination of money, guarantees, and control means any move would require Burrow’s consent and careful management of bonus and cap implications by both teams involved, on top of the massive draft and player compensation it would likely take to satisfy Cincinnati.

Performance-wise, Burrow’s recent seasons reinforce why such a price tag exists. When healthy, he has produced at a level that places him comfortably in the league’s top quarterback tier, including a Super Bowl appearance and multiple high-end passing campaigns.

Even in an injury-affected 2025 season, he finished with strong efficiency and touchdown-to-interception numbers in limited starts, underscoring why the Bengals built their roster and financial plan around him. Burrow ranked 10th with a B- grade in the PFSN NFL QB Rankings for the 2025 NFL season.

That is why most coverage of the situation continues to frame a trade as unlikely without a major shift in Burrow’s own stance. So far, reporting has not indicated a formal trade request, and public comments from Cincinnati players and observers have repeatedly pushed back on the idea that he is truly on the market.

The scenarios described by Lewis and Cohn are rooted in Minnesota’s side of the equation: What the Vikings could be prepared to offer and how far they would go if an opening emerged.
