On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills announced that Joe Brady, their former offensive coordinator, would be the club’s newest head coach. With several other names floating around as possible suitors, some fans have questioned why pursuing Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak was not further explored.
As the Seahawks prepare for Super Bowl 60, Kubiak is limited in the teams he can meet with and interview for a new position.
NFL Insider Explains Rule Potentially Withholding Klint Kubiak From Buffalo
While Buffalo and Seattle’s OC may have seemed like a perfect fit, the two were unable to meet due to a league rule. NFL insider Peter Schrager posted on X, describing the situation before the decision to hire Brady.
“Many Bills fans asking about Klint Kubiak and why he hasn’t been mentioned as much as other candidates,” said Schrager. “He could still be in the mix. But timing is complicated. Kubiak is not allowed to speak with the Bills until after the Super Bowl. Buffalo’s FIRST meeting would be Feb 9.”

With questions spiraling after Schrager’s post on the rule, the 43-year-old posted again, further elaborating on the logistics of the dilemma.
“Because McDermott was not fired until after the Divisional Round, league rules prohibit Kubiak from meeting with Buffalo,” said Schrager. “He can take a SECOND interview with the Raiders this week. But he isn’t allowed a FIRST with the Bills. Buffalo has to wait two full weeks just to meet him.”

Due to the somewhat surprising and untimely firing, McDermott’s dismissal has left the Bills ailing in their ability to meet with Seattle’s offensive guru. Whether or not Kubiak would have been interviewed, let alone hired, remains a mystery; however, his ability to call an offense is more than apparent.
Kubiak Plays Major Role in Seattle’s Cinderella Super Bowl Run
After a 14-win season with the Minnesota Vikings, quarterback Sam Darnold was surprisingly dismissed. As a career of being overlooked continued, Seattle decided to take a chance on the 28-year-old. Now, the combination of him and Kubiak has led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl appearance since 2015.
Darnold’s revival comes with no shortage of praise for the club’s OC, who seems more and more like a soon-to-be head coach.
“What Klint [Kubiak] and our entire offensive staff have been able to come up with is remarkable, what they do on a week-to-week basis to get ready for these games,” said Darnold.
Using the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metric, Seattle lands in the top 10 units with a 79.8 impact score and a C+ grade under Kubiak’s regime. The Seahawks put up a total of 483 points in the regular season, good for third in the NFL.
With a clear emphasis on Kubiak and his ability to lead a modern NFL offense, will he remain in Seattle or land a head coaching position elsewhere?
