The New York Jets continue to be linked to some of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft — even after signing Justin Fields to a $40 million contract in free agency. NFL insider Ian Rapoport addressed the idea of the team taking a quarterback at No. 7 during a recent appearance on “Good Morning Football.”

Ian Rapoport Discusses Possibility of Jets Taking QB in 2025 NFL Draft
With quarterback projections all over the place, some believe three could go in the top 10 picks, while others think only two might be selected in the entire first round. The uncertainty surrounding this year’s quarterback class has created all kinds of speculation — including the idea that the Jets could use their first-round pick on a signal-caller.
The Jets currently hold the No. 7 overall pick and have been floated as a potential landing spot for a quarterback on Day 1. But according to Rapoport, that outcome doesn’t seem very likely, given the team’s offseason moves.
“My sense is that they probably will not. Now, I know it’s the draft; everyone lies, who knows. But [it’s] hard to imagine, for me, Justin Fields signing with the Jets if there was any thought that, potentially, they would take a quarterback,” Rapoport said.
Fields, who turns 26 this season, doesn’t exactly fit the mold of a veteran bridge quarterback. He’s still young, still developing, and still has upside. If the Jets were planning to bring in a rookie quarterback, it would suggest that Fields is just a temporary option — making the team’s $40 million investment seem questionable at best.
Rapoport: Jets to ‘Build Around Justin Fields’
While Fields hasn’t lived up to his first-round potential just yet, he’s shown flashes — especially as a dynamic runner who can keep defenses off balance. Rapoport believes the Jets will give him a real opportunity to succeed by building the roster around his strengths.
“He’s a young guy who could end up being their franchise quarterback. I expect them to try to build around Justin Fields. Maybe it’s another offensive lineman. Really strong defensive line and edge draft early on — maybe they go there. Ashton Jeanty, if he’s available at seven, that, certainly, would be a possibility as well,” Rapoport said.

After going all-in on a Super Bowl run with Aaron Rodgers, only to have it fall apart due to injury, the Jets are now in a reset phase. Fields might be the answer, or he might not. But he gives them a chance to see if they’ve found their long-term guy — without having to use their top pick on a quarterback. Instead, they can focus on surrounding him with talent and building a more complete roster.
